Valve adjustment 1985 300SD

Hey Guys,

Forgive me if this information is buried within the Forum, I need quick information because my garage floor is covered with tools and parts.

I was given a video for the valve adjustment for a 1985 300SD. It is very comprehensive. And yet, I am stymied. I am unable to place a 27mm socket on the vibration damper in order to turn the crankshaft to find Top Dead Center. The radiator shroud is in the way. I could take off the fan, but that would slack up the belts and besides I hate twisting wrenches around the open face of a radiator anyway.

Is using a starter button bad form? Will using the starter to achieve TDC chip up the bendix or the flywheel. My diesel starts very easily, so I will probably have to remove one or more glow plugs to avoid unintended starting, yes?

Somebody knows what to do.

Thank You,

Joe Marroso
