Crushed?

Does the car actually need to be crushed? I was told that they could still be sold for scrap, parted out at that point, but the engines are disabled/destroyed first.

Engine Disablement ONLY required

Here the Dealers are dumping all the CARS candidates onto one of the local
Recycler's yards (after destroying the engines).

Anyone who's "Crushing the Clunkers" is Stupid.[and throwing away money]

I saw a nice 500 series BMW with the C4C on it. The paint was in very good shape. I do not know the year though.

Well GM (Gov't Motors) is getting bailed out again., or so it seems along with the other car companies.

I still want someone to show the math formula used to show that having a car payment and higher insurance is better for some one like me who's older cars are paid off and cost about $49 a month to insure.

Here in the people's republic of michigan older cars such as Mercedes are taxed the same as they were new, and insurance is rediculous (another reason I'm leaving the state). Thanks Jenny.

Only the gas cars. I only pay $36 a year to register my 300SD.....can't beat that. And my insurance for BOTH cars is under $1000 a year. So I don't really know where you're getting your numbers from.....I can register AND insure both of my MB's for under $1100 a year....that's pretty darn good! And it will only get lower as I get older and don't have the young driver surcharges....

Plus, we don't have to pay for or deal with yearly inspections here...well worth it IMHO.

How does it work there? In Delaware we do it a little differently; you go through inspection at the DMV and then pay for your tags. Even though you have to sit in line (if you go at the wrong time), it's pretty convenient and easy. I'll take it an day over having to schedule and pay for an inspection at a garage.

The '85 SD is ~$150 a year for registration.

Soduim silicate in the oil. Run the engine until it locks up.

I've been told by a local junkyard that they drain the oil, pour in some resin/epoxy, run until seize.

Anything oil lubricated could/would be affected by this method.

They have 120 days to sell parts off the car. After that whatever is left must be crushed. What they put into the engine is basically very very fine sand mixed with water. The water evaporates and the sand is left behind on the bearings.

And ya... I pay about double to plate and insure my SDL then what I pay to plate and insure my TDI... and my TDI has more coverage

It costs less to put plates on my friends 2003 F350 too!

120 days is usually about how long a car spends in a junk yard anyways....so not much difference overall I suppose.

The yards around here started crushing them two days after the program began. It's up to them and I think a lot aren't bothering. Although maybe when they get a Mercedes or Jag they hang on to it to sell the parts ... might be worth the time and space. Seems to me though that most of the "clunkers" are being flattened right away, though, at least they definitely are around here. We had a nice sensationalist photo gallery of it on my paper's Web site.

I think it's 180 days after being received by the disposal facility.
