I just ordered the heat shields (crush washers) that fit at the bottom of the injectors. Since I have the injectors out and some of the heat shields blew out, I am going to replace all of the heat shields. I hope these get here before the weekend.

Should I clean the injectors? If so, with what?

The heat shields are one time use anyway, they crush a bit when you tighten down the injector.

I'd think you could carefully take the injector apart and soak the pieces in an ultrasonic cleaner. That shouldn't affect the pop pressure and should clean them up nicely.

Riddle me this: Why do Mercedes and VW use different heat shields, even though the injector is the same? The Mercedes ones have a larger opening. Is it something to do with the prechamber vs swirlchamber design?

Yeah, I knew the heat shields were a "one time use" item. I could not find them locally --- did not call the dealer because their hours don't align with my work hours; none of the local places have them.

Ordered them from Phil.

I have no idea why the size is different.

Next update.

The is over for Next........

I replaced the starter today and had a very hot white Mercedes battery. With the first crank, it sounded MUCH better......the starter was spinning much FASTER.

checked the injector lines at the injectors....not wet yet.....cranked some more......Then I had wet spots. Tighten the injector lines down....cranked some more....

and

then it happen. Next came to life. It doesn't want to idle with my foot off the pedal, but once the cobwebs got blown out the engine sounded pretty good. The oil pressure was quite high. The Tach worked; then quit. Hmmmmm. I have to wonder if I blew a fuse. Maybe the alternator is not working as it seemed like the next series of cranks were weaker.

I got Next started about 3 times. Huuu Ray!

It sounds like it was stuck, as you could not turn it over by hand (with the injectors out it should turn over rather easy) . . . but it could have been the strong charger, putting some amps to the stater freed it up.

One thing I'd be concerned with is, If the engine was stuck, and it loosened up with the oil, you could have "spots" where the rings were "resting" . . . they may wear off, but may cause problems . . . especially if a ring got cracked in the process . . .

I have never done this before, other than to a lawn mower, and I pulled the head, put some oil in the cyl, and let it sit a few days, took a piece of wood and a hammer and loosened up the piston, then I pulled the piston, and honed the cyl, and put in new rings . . .

Welcome to the cheap W116 club.

I'm still needing a bamboo back seat, drivers arm rest.

Front Seat Question

Are w116 front seats different from w123 front seats??

Are the seat bottoms inter-changable?

Yes. But every time I say so, someone corrects me. There's a thread around here which says 123,116, 126 seat bases are all the same part number. Nobody chimed in to say otherwise at that time, so I'm going with it. With some swaps you have to change your old rails to the bottom of the new seat. 126 seats should work too, sans electrical bits. Early 126 seats with MB-tex should look correct too. Only the seat backs are different, but they give another inch or so for your knees, and IMO look better than the flat seat-back panels. I've seen lots of 81s with black MB-tex, manual seats.

116 300SD with black leather seats are rare. It would be so cool if you could find a black leather interior.

I can hardly wait to see this thing washed and drivable. Anxiously awaiting new pics.

Daw,
DUDE! I thought I bought some dirty looking cars but WOW!! What did it look like after the washing? What is the current status of it?

Chad, How is Coda holding doing? That silver 116 looks sweet! didn't think I'd like the black interior but it's not bad at all

"Next" got "bumped" in the driver's door by the shop's forklift last week, but once I heard the story, I could feel the pain of the shop owner who really .

I power washed the w116 --- maybe a bit too much; stripped the paint off in a few areas. Most of the "black" came off. The chrome is in VERY good condition. I guess it has not oxidized much since it was covered with tree sap and bug "juice".

The engine still seems like it is NOT spinning fast enough to start. So, the original starter I took off, I took to the local rebuilder. They called this morning to report the inside of the starter looks brand new, but I had them replace the solenoid switch anyway.

The next thing I'm going to try is to adjust the valves --- this car needs to run very soon or else it will be on the chopping block.

Anyone interested in a w116?

I didn't have my camera with me --- I know, this thread needs some more pics.

Also notice that you're missing the drivers' side rearview mirror. I don't know about where you live, but in several states that makes you non road-legal when you get ready to go with it. Looks pretty nice otherwise, all things considered.

cleaned and .....oops, "dented".

Pics as promised.
The clean part is per the power steam cleaner. Some soap, but no rubbing. Please notice the dent in the driver's door and broken door handle --- hate it when that happens.

Have you worked something out with the shop owner? If that happened to my 300D, an agreement would be reached quickly or police would be called-on me, for what I'd do the guy.
