Key lock troubles, big troubles.
The car is a 1984 300SD. The Ignition key (IK) is stuck in position 0. In order to remove tumbler and then the lock assy from the steering column the IK has to be in position 1. What now?
I have looked all over the Lock assy and cannot locate the button that has to be pushed in to withdraw the lock assy from the column. ( if I could get the IK to position 1) Would it be possible to drill our the realese push button? If I could find it. Could the Lock assy be withdrawn with the tumbler and screw on cap in place? HELP! HELP! Please HELP.

First make sure the steering wheel is free to move from side-to-side slightly. If it's holding pressure, inside the column, against the lock, it can cause it to bind. I've literally had to jack a car to unload the pressure (just due to the situation the car was in).
If it doesn't seem to be binding, and depending on where the car is, vibration while turning the key has helped most. I've seen a orbital sander mentioned as a vibration source. When this happened to me, I took a break and gingerly finessed it to turn. If the key isn't turning, it is a failure of the tumbler, not the column lock.

You either get the key to turn or you are going to be drilling the tumbler out I believe. The tumbler release is a small hole in the tumbler that lines up with the key in the proper position.

Hi Barry. I had already replaced the tumbler with a new one. That part was easy. It was when I had the new tumbler installed and turned it back to 0 to start the car the key would not move from 0 position. In the past two days I have tried every trick mentioned on this board to turn the key. No go.
This problem is different from a worn tumbler.

Found the bush button, on the bottom. I must remove the plastic sleeve around the steering column. I have the wheel off now and not sure what to do with the cruise and wiper switches. I think the sleeve comes up to remove so switches have to come of. Now 10 minutes later I have the switch assembly unscrewed and there is enough slack in the cables to allow the sleeve to be moved into a position that gives access to the button for drilling. I am taking pictures of this crazy procedure and will post later. Just center punched the pin it is soft I think. Now on with the drilling. I center punched the pin with an automatic punch, one of those spring loaded things. better to get a good center. Drilled a 3/32" then completed the pin removal with a 3/16". Presto, out came the lock assembly. Oh Oh. Whats this. The three screws holding the switch on the rear don't have their heads exposed. Nice trick Heinrick. It's martini time. The saga continues tomorrow.
