My $650 190D

While browsing Craigslist I saw a delightfully lacking details ad for a 1984 190d for $659 with a transmission with no 1st or 2nd gears.

A trip to Vancouver revealed that it was a fairly decent - no body damage, completely rust-free, original paint, 229k miles 190d. That transmission - It's a 5-speed. The owner shows how there is no resistance in the 1&2 position. It starts right up and sounds sweet. I pay him $650 with little argument.

I trailer it home and look underneath, fully expecting it to have just lost or dropped the linkage for 1&2..... But they're all fully attached. Hmmm.....

A little more poking around and I find the tab on the transmission moves in and out - ah-hah! The 6mm bolt inside the tab all tightened up - shifts like a dream.

I'm pretty happy with this deal. It's got some issues still - the glow plug relay is dead (good compression, still starts right up in 30 degree weather with no plugs), cracked dash, and the headliner was mysteriously ripped out.... It also came with an AMG-like body kit which is in the back of the truck (and the front bumper from which is sort of on the car....) I don't think that is getting installed however.

What do you all think?

PS - Anyone need a cream-colored 300SD with a multitude of problems for cheap? The bright side is that it has a strong motor.
You lucky dog!!!! Am Soooooooooo jealous!!!

wow, the 4cyl with 5speed manual... good score!

what's under the dash mat?

you should be able to get 40+mpg out of that one!

it's possible you'll be able to sell the amg kit for the purchase price of your car!

WOW!

I'm a manual transmission fanatic! I have a 300E 5 speed a few 4 speed 240D's a manual transmission Vette and my 4X4 pickup is a manual.

It sounds like you have the makings for a great car and one that you can drive now.

Good job!

Good score. someone w/o any knowledge of cars is sometimes at the mercy of those that do.

with a litt TLC it shoud be back to it`s former glory.

I see these 190`s in the yard all the time, and many have perfect interiors. you should be able to find a headliner, crack free dash and other parts.
I have been to the 3 PNP`s around Portland and the one in Vancouver. so you have plenty to chose from. not sure where Aurora is from there.

I have come across 2 5-spds that had that problem with the trans in the yards. that might have been why they were there. just a loose bolt.

Good deal for you. I paid $2,000 for my former '85 190D 2.2 5 speed, and thought I got a great deal. Mine had a real nice blue interior (leather seats). You have minor issues on yours for the price you paid.

I'm interested to know how it performs. The one I had would have problems holding 55 on the highway in 5th. I tried filters are whatnot, it just never would get out of it's own way. It was a parts car after all, so I really didn't care too much. But if I found one that worked right, I wouldn't mind those mpg's.

Been busy getting it all cleaned up, that interior was seriously dirty. Did find the original owners manual which has all the stamps up to about 120k and includes the original owner and dealer's names.

Went and got a headliner from Pick-N-Pull. It's actually very straightforward to R&R as almost everything is clipped or bracketed on. The only trouble stop is the back goes under the rear window seal which I could remove so I very carefully cut the headliner under the seal as best I could. Reinstallation was fairly easy and I just tucked it under the seal. Came out ok, check out the before and after picks - Huge improvement!

Pulled a glow plug relay from a 300SD, it has an extra pin for the 5th plug but that doesn't affect it at all. Glow light now comes on and goes off as it should and starts right up.

Put a radio in it, found a shift boot, fixed the backup light switch. Still need to find some palomino door panels as these are horribly sun burnt and cracked...
