A/C 240 high side, 90 low side, what does it mean?
On the 1984 300DT, I measured the A/C at 240 high side and 90 on the low side. the compressor sounds like ball bearings are sloshing around inside, not good. What do these readings mean? Compressor failure? Expansion valve?

overcharged, too much oil, bad compressor valves... etc, without additional information, it's hard to tell what's wrong.
EXACTLY how much refrigerant is in the system? what are the temps of the lines entering and leaving the compressor? what temp is the line leaving the condenser? what temp is the line entering the evaporator? how clean is the evaporator? how clean is the blower? what temp is the discharge air? what temp is it outside? what temp is it in the car?

I understand how to check the outside temp and discharge is no problem, but how do I check the temps of the lines entering and leaving the compressor? also, how do I check the temp of the line entering the evaporator? how do I check to see how clean the evaporator and blower are? sorry for all the questions, I'm a newbie to A/C work. |

well,
exactly what have you done to the a/c so far? have you added refrigerant to the system? how much? please describe exactly the conditions that were present before you began working on it, and exactly what you have done so far. skip no steps please...

VS,
You know it would really be good if there was some sort of template to fill in for a/c assistance requests. If when people were to fill in a list of particular information for all a/c help requests it could add lots of efficiency to the process. A list to start off with might be: Ambient Temp Vent Temp High Side pressure Low Side pressure Refrigerant Make Model ACC or Manual Climate Control You might have some other good questions to add to the list. Something like this could be a real help to the poster as well as the "care giver." Just a thought.

Approx seven years ago, I purchased a new receiver dryer, expansion valve and A/C compressor. I also had a hose shop make up new A/C hoses. I then installed the hoses and the new expansion valve. I then took the car to a mercedes benz trained mechanic with an ASE certification to install the receiver dryer and compressor and fill with oil and R12. Unfortunately, he installed an incorrect sized washer between a line and the compressor which resulted in all of the refrigerant leaking out.
So, I then took the car to another mechanic who discovered the wrong sized washer and installed the correct sized washer which resulted in the system holding vacuum. I then took the car to a shop specializing in auto A/C systems to have the R12 installed along with Polymax2 Maximum Performance Refrigerant Oil. The system has worked great up until about six months ago whereupon it stopped cooling. When checking pressures last evening which turned in 240 high side and 90 low side, the A/C compressor sounded like a washing machine with ball bearings flying around inside! I'm thinking my problem is the cheap made in china compressor.... or the compressor clutch.. Last edited by HuskyMan; 06-05-2012 at 09:17 AM. |
