Rich, it is too much work to do a R&R of engine. You know my skill level. I think I am going to tinker with this one for a while. It is not I am short of cars, just short of running cars.

If you decided to buy the car for the engine, I could do the work for you. I have all the tools and a way to transport the car (car hauler). Let me know what you think, Rich

Thanks Rich. I need to think about my next move. Fixing it is on the table but I may vacate it for a while and buy a CDI first.

I think the engine is shot. I peeked inside the sump and the oil pump chain snapped and the broken parts are chain rollers, as suggested by Sixto and SL320. The rest of the fragments probably are shavings from the rod bearings. The damage to the engine was done when my wife heard a loud noise on the freeway. The oil pump is driven by a single chain and I am surprised that it snapped at 305K

I would suspect that the oil pump chain tensioner slide piece went first and then the chain.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I know of a 603 that had the oil pump sprocket shear off when the oil pump sucked a vacuum pump BB through the mesh. It's a tough chain.

I wonder if a low pressure alarm as in Jeremy's thread revived over the weekend would have helped. Who has the presence of mind to shut off the engine while cruising on the freeway? Is it necessarily the safer choice?

Oops, it references Jeremy's project but Jeremy didn't start this thread.

Well, actually both. The term used for this type of device is "bucket". The term "lifter" is used mainly for a pushrod engine. The term "cam follower" is also used for MB engines. The 617 uses cam followers, but sometimes called "rocker arms". Most all OHC engines (US, Europe, Japan) nowadays (and for years) use buckets (hydraulic or shim). I believe (please correct me if I am wrong) that from at least 1984 till the present, all MB engines are designed with this system (cam directly over the valve using a hydraulic bucket).

Fished out the oil pump gear chain. It snapped. How could it happen? What gave? It is a shame that a simple problem busted the engine.

How many miles were on the engine? What oil did you use and how often was it changed?

probably a piece of steel from somewhere got loose into the pan and worked its way through the screen on the oil pickup then jammed the oil pump.

Is it possible to reach in and try to turn the oil pump gear by hand to determine if it jammed? Some forensic examination of the cause might be really helpful.

306K on the engine. Bought the car at 245K so I kind of get my money worth. Always use dino oil and change oil interval at 3+K, never more than 4K since I owned it. Invested a repaint on the car, fixed minor oil leaks otherwise it has been very reliable.

Will try to turn the pump by hand tonight.

ahhhhh

A repainted 300SDL should be a great candidate for an engine swap.
