283V8 was the stock mill in the Studebaker Hawk. They slapped a Paxton Supercharger on it and it would do 140 off the showroom floor.

My Mom got her first speeding ticket in one...She was clocked doing 125 on the Hutch Parkway in Westchester county.

They also made 259's, and 232's There may have been another size in there too. All of them are identical except for bore, stroke and I suppose valve size, and cam grinds. They have rocker shafts like the early cad ohv and are virtual clones of the caddy motor except for displacement. Some parts actually interchange between the cad and studie. They both are very heavy motors at around 650# with the studie actually weighing a few pounds more than the much larger displacement caddy due to the smaller bore leaving more block behind. They also have cam gears. The studie motor is a very high quality unit and known for good fuel economy.

Actually the supercharged engines were of studebaker manufacture and were all 289 I believe. Studebaker offered a 283 of Chevy manufacture in 65 and 66 after studebaker engine production ceased.

With a turbo 400 tranny it would make a pretty sweet driving piece which should be capable of mid twenties on fuel economy and at resale time a belly button 350 could be dropped in if necessary by me or the new owner.

2. Going full Studebaker. My favorite machinist has a 63 parts car with a complete 259 v8 which with the right gears should deliver 20 mph highway. That would appeal to the studey guys.

I dunno, a nicely done mb diesel swap would not appeal to everybody but there are some pretty nutty guys out there who might like it. The advantage is I have a lot of the parts on hand now.....but all the engine swapping books ridicule people who make a swap because thats what they have on hand!
one of my old rod magazines has an article about a 331 stude powered fenderless rod pickup--it said it had a cadillac intake on it-port spacing must of been an easy fit, anyway the nostalga wave of vintage intakes and holley 94s is going strong the guy was a canadian and used the motor from his dads old car. here's the rat.

Thats pretty cool!

The stude v8 is basically copied from the 331 caddy. The stude came in 224, 231, 259 and 289 cubic inches. It was also raced at 304 ci but I don't think any of those got onto the street. they are so similar I would not be surprised if the intakes interchange.

That one has the four bolts through the valve cover fasteners of a Studebaker. The cad valve covers fasten on the bottom edge like a gm....chevy olds etc.

uh yes it was a 289 stude with a caddy 331 intake--which there are lots of aftermarket part being reproduced like the offy intake.

The Offenhauser dual deuce intake manifold is from a 331 Cadillac (Studebaker & Cadillac are very similar in design)
Carbs are Rochester 2G’s. Finned valley cover & Offenhauser finned rocker covers.

Anyway i wouldn't give a sheet what someone else said about putting the benz 617 in it--I wouldn't build this truck to appeal to ricky racers that sit around watching all the cable TV shows--insead of actually doing something themselves. Some vehicles you have to build mainly keeping the for sale value in mind-balanced by whats realistic with what you have to work with, $ and what you have on hand. Anyone thinking building a proturing 69 camaro with a corvette c5 chassis and a $4000 tremic 5 speed and ls1 and --on and on, thinking they will make money is a delusional duck!. And the same could be said for completely going thru a w123 just because its rust free.

That interview is good! I like the little truck very much. I like everything except the stupid grenade gear shift knob.

I sat in the coupe express today. I was planning to change the steering column but in looking at the factory one the horn button is so dang cool I may have to keep the lethal POS.

The seating position was very nice although it looks like it could not be by the apparent angle of the seat to the back. The view out the rather small and laid back windshield definately looks like a chopped and channeled 3 window coupe!

A Dodge caravan 2000 ^ third row leather seat is a nice bench, the second row lil captains chairs are purty good choice too-the arm rests aren't perfect but they're OK.

What panZZer said and the third row bench reclines in increments and has fore-aft adjustment. The head rests don't go up very high, though.

Thanks for the suggestions but I will probably recover the original seat. it sits pretty well even though there is clear evidence of it being occupied by squirrells at some point.

My Grandpa Loren worked in the Studebaker upholstery shop AFIK in 1939 and I am hoping to find his signature in there somewhere.

Besides its pretty comfy in that way only an old bench seat can be.

Take a close look at a 3rd generation Caravan. AC is the only technology it has that wasn't standard in the '30s
