Yeah...
My sister (when she drove the blue 85) informed me that the engine didn't die with the key off. I told her to buy a shutoff actuator and I'd replace, and in the mean time pop the hood and use the STOP lever. Well, she waited months, and finally the hood latch broke from her popping it every time she needed to turn it off... Then I was faced with a problem. The engine was running and I had no way to get to it. I ended up using vice grips with fuel line slipped over the jaws, and I clamped the supply line that comes out of the tank strainer to cut off the fuel. It idled for 45 minutes before it started to slow down. Once it got to a shaky slow idle, I put it in reverse and turned the wheel all the way to lock, and that loaded it enough that it died. Then I spent the next 3 days trying to pop the hood from beneath... I don't see the need for an aftermarket fuel cut though, seeing as how there's a factory one that works exceptionally well built right into the back of the injection pump.

As stated, my situation is unique. Tom's situation is pretty special, too, as few Studebaker Coupe Expresses came with Mercedes Diesels with vacuum shut off. As I understand it they're using a wiring kit (brand unknown) with an ignition switch with 12 VDC-only functionality. I don't know if he has retained the vacuum pump or not. I sent him some goodies that could work but a lot of the stuff I sent was to make the engine shut off if all power was cut - probably way overkill for his situation (a box full of relays and junk). But there IS a good solenoid valve in there that could work easily IF you have a source of vacuum.
Tom - don't make me come there and fix this!!!!!! Dan |

If you wanted to install a sutoff Solenoid between the Filter and the Fuel Injection Pump you could replace the Plastic Hose with Rubber Hose. I replaced those lines with Rubber Hose when I did My Fuel filter Mod with no negative issues.

My line was fresh with the engine install so it's pretty new. But I did go with OEM-style tubing so I decided not to squish it. When I'm feeling a bit better (fighting a cold) I'll pick up a ball valve and fittings and put it in that line. It'll be interesting to see what it does - might work! Like I said, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a valve there anyhow.

Tom:
The thought of using a choke knob sounds "year appropriate" for the vehicle. Consider using the Bowden wire to operate a simple vacuum selector valve, and retaining the original MB vacuum shutoff on the IP. |

Sounds good.
Where do you suggest getting a vacuum selector valve Frank?
