Gotta be better than using used fish-fry oil

I ran out of fuel in my 87 300d the other day and drove it to a station on a gallon of trans fluid. Ran so smooth.

Good .

I've never run farm Diesel but I've seen many Diesel powered engines ruined by heating oil over the decades .

Post Alternative Fuels

The ATF is very detergent and prolly cleaned out some crud .

Used waste oil takes a HUGE amount of cleaning and conditioning to not cause damage, few ever bother because of the effort necessary .

Would have thought heating oil would be ok to use, but of course, not on-road legal. I have never used it, but I have a suspicion a neighbor might have in an old Volvo. Hardly anyone around here uses oil for heating these days.

Other than the dye, sulphur spec and maybe some kerosene in winter diesel, not much difference between the two. Some heating oil may be a bit heavier than diesel so perhaps harder work for injection pumps? But it has same BTU content.

Farm diesel is sold near us in an Indian Reserve at big discount from road diesel. They don't worry much about rules and have asked me which one I wanted! Never used the farm diesel though.

I found some Propel bio Diesel for $3.15 yesterday , stopped and filled up .

Heating oil is in now way the same as highly refined Diesel fuel .

Apparently, ULSD diesel and HHO may come out of same storage tank in NY harbor!

Best prices in Myrtle Beach - $1.73 for regular, $1.86 for diesel. Lots of places under two bucks.

Crud oil price is not rising as fast as diesel fuel. Up here in eastern Canada. Up to about 4.00 an American gallon as of yesterday. Fortunately I am not concerned as in our newer diesels all the fuel is well covered by expense accounts. In fact starting tomorrow the heavy highway runs resume after the virus situation shut them down for months.

I do have a full 200 Canadian gallon tank of furnace oil in the basement. The heat pump surprised me and meets the load of the house just fine alone.

I was wondering if I used 3/4 diesel fuel oil and added 1/4 of the furnace oil and perhaps a small amount of new vegetable oil. Could there be an issue with the old 123 type diesel engines doing so? I cannot risk any kind of mix in the more modern diesels.

It would be even better if I could use 2/3 diesel fuel and 1/3 furnace oil plus say six ounces of new vegetable oil.

We were told both products are the same in this region other than coloring is added. It may even be true as one vendor locally was fined 15K for not adding the coloring.

What do you fellows think?

I want to get rid of the furnace oil. By doing so I hope to also get the home insurance policy down a little. Few burn furnace oil up here now with the cost of it. I estimate it costs about 150.00 a month to heat this large house using the heat pump. During the heating season. Versus perhaps 500.00 a month for furnace oil at around the peak prices.

This cheap fuel is rising fast here. I doubt it will go back down again.

In an old diesel the fuel oil will burn all the same as diesel as they are essentially the same thing. Could always throw a few gallons into each tank on the car until its used up....would make next to no difference.

Could also just heat with it until its gone....then go back to heat pump.

Diesel is cheaper here in Burlington, WI currently.
Kwik Trip regular $2.25 diesel $2.17

the Mobil up the street has diesel even cheaper than that with gas the same but I don't remember the exact numbers and not listed on google maps, I think it was regular $2.25 and diesel $2.08.

No clue how it's done in Canada, but down here in the states I'd never consider running dyed/untaxed fuel. My 617 wouldn't care, and I have no moral objection, but the potential fine makes it just not worth the trouble.

If you post on CL or Kijiji that you'll fill 5 gallon fuel cans for $0.50/gal under what the current going rate is, you'll have it gone in a hurry.
