Hey 'Yota! Glad you're finding some time to mess with the truck. I find wrenching is great therapy and intend to get some in myself in the VERY near future (all my time has been going into medical stuff.....).

Ruh roh! Hope all is well and turns out well. We all put a lot of work into our wheeled conveyances but without our health, and that of our family and friends, it's all for naught.

This is gonna sound funny but it's really no big deal, just prostate cancer. I've found THE solution with proton beam therapy, not to be confused with conventional radiation therapy. The main difference is that you have to have a cyclotron to make the protons.

The down side is that I'll be holed up in Jacksonville, FL for 2 months as they bombard the tumor every weekday to wipe that sucker out. But few (if any) men have ANY lingering side effects and the vast majority have NO side effects at all. The big deal is that you simply have to go thru the process and that's what I've been prepping to do (getting MRIs, sending off reports from my local docs, etc.) That part is pretty well complete so then it's just a matter of getting in line to get under the beam - I'm off in mid-June for a little more prep then the therapy will likely start around July 1.

Well, that's both terrible, and freaking awesome news, at the same time. Reminds me of the parable of the Chinese farmer. Best wishes, sir.

I'm very sorry to hear of the illness. If you had to choose a cancer to have though probably Prostate cancer is the most treatable. Best of luck with the treatment. Keep hanging out here to distract you as much as possible.

First, thanks for the kind thoughts and good wishes. However, with proton beam therapy this really isn't a big deal and I've never felt a sense that I needed to be all wound up over this.

Florida Proton is the second most experienced facility in the US on this (the most experienced is in CA) so I'm in the hands of pros. I'm absolutely fascinated by the technology and am really looking forward to starting treatment and getting the "behind the scenes" tour of the cyclotron (they do those once a month or so so I'll have at least one chance to go). So instead of dread I'm feeling excitement, kind of like being on the starting line at the track.

The actual treatment takes about 30 minutes a day with only about 1-3 minutes of that being exposure to the beam - the rest is getting the beam aimed properly. So I'll have lots of time to take in the sights of Jax and environs. I plan to take in the NASCAR museum in Daytona and many other interesting attractions.

So don't feel all that sorry for me!

Dan

In your place, I'd pull #3 delivery valve and inspect it very closely. If you see any wear similar to either of the pictures on page 7 in post #97 or #98, that is probably your problem.

http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/363700-delivery-valve-internal-leak-cause-nailing-yes-no-maybe-7.html

If you've still got your old pump, you can pull a used DV from that. Use the entire assembly (holder as well as internals). Take some time to really study what you've got to do and what you MUST not touch. Screw this up and you may need another IP or mess up an injector or two.

Thank you, that's outstanding and may well be my issue. The symptoms are sooooooooo similar.

Just got off the phone with the local Bosch service center, the delivery valves for the 617 are still available new, nearly $50/ea. PN 1 418 512 008. I have DV crush washers on the way, but at that price for DV's I'll be verifying mine are bad and possibly scavenging some out of my other IP before replacing them. Although even at $250 for the full job, if I could have paid that two years ago and had this done, I would have done so HAPPILY.

Thanks again.

Just want to post a public THANK YOU to Mach4 for a delivery valve holder and a really awesome pen. You're a class act, thank you for the gifts and for all you've done for the MBZ community.

Bit of an update. After the DV thread, I yanked + checked mine and compared to photos in the thread. All looked fine, no pits or ridges or anything. Even consistent grey area where the DV contacted the seat all the way around, and that's it, on all five.

Fooey. I know it's silly to be hoping FOR a problem, but after years of chasing this issue around I was really hoping for something here. Some clue as to WTF is going on.

Then upon reassembly and inspection, EUREKA.

A SCRATCH ON THE DV HOLDER SEALING SURFACE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Deep enough to catch a fingernail in. About 4:30 in the pic.

Yanked a DV holder from my spare engine(which I was really wanting to keep intact, hence my asking for someone to sell me a DV holder above) and swapped it in.

I am cautiously optimistic. Lots of times before I've done something that's made a positive difference for a short period, only to have the problem crop up again shortly. That said, this is MUCH better. Best it's run in years. Random rattle upon acceleration is gone. Rhythmic tapping when coasting down has been almost entirely eliminated and is well within acceptable levels. No more people looking over wondering if they'll get to watch my engine explode or if it'll last long enough to get out of sight first. Weird Cummins-y idle sound is still there. Much more smooth at idle.

Couple hundred miles since the last update, all still well.

I am so stinking happy to nail this thing down. Hate to give up on a conversion project because of a niggling detail like this but it was getting close.
