$140.00 xzn socket set... $2 adapter... moron...

ok, I'm an idiot.

I pulled out my SNAP ON xzn sockets to pull the head off a parts car 602... I'm TRYING REALLY HARD to get a timing cover for a member that needs one...
anyway, I pull the cam bits out, pull the cam caps off, and set them aside, pick up the chunks of lifters... start pulling on the breaker bar pulling head bolts...

1-12 pulled off just fine... #13 and the 1/2" to 3/8" adapter I had on the breaker bar SNAPPED OFF INSIDE MY NICE NEW SOCKET!!!
so... I now need to drill and tap the adapter chunk to pull it out of my socket... fun.

Naww...you should be able to just drive it out with a pin type punch from the jaws side of your socket.

I broke a wobble head extension in a socket the other day whilst trying to remove my interior. Luckily, I could push through!

Snap-on used to make a 1/2"-3/8" Drive adapter that had a Shear Pin in it; so it would not snap the 3/8 part.

Look up something called an Inertia Bullet Puller. It is essentially a plastic Hammer hollowed out so that a loaded cartridge goes into one end and the other end holds the cartridge by the Base.
You swing the Hammer and the Hammer stops but the Bullet keeps moving and extracts itself from the Cartridge.
So you would need something to clamp the Socket securely to something (a handle) that you can swing against something that causes a sudden stop and allows room for the 3/8" square to eject it self.
You might first try a putting the Socket into a Vice Grips and beating the Vice Grips against something Metal or Concrete. But, it would be better if you had something with a longer handle.

You could perhaps Weld a piece of Metal to the 3/8" square so you have something to pull it out.

That is a PITA! I had one snap on me when I was trying to take off some over-torqued lug nuts with my breaker bar. The adapter was a Northern Tool brand. For whatever reason, I could not find my Proto adapter that day. I have since bought a set of 1/2" impact sockets and a better impact driver.

I can't dispute the quality of my grandfather's Proto tools or the unexpected durability of the Husky socket set I bought. I have seen some cheap trash for sockets but I have to admit that I am shocked how well built the Husky kit I got from Home Depot is. I use these sockets on my impact to take off bolts that are very highly torqued. I break adapters before the sockets budge. I think I was jumping on the 1/2" breaker bar with a Husky 17mm 3/8" socket when the adapter broke. I was completely expecting the breaker bar head to snap.

Maybe try smacking the corner of the socket on an anvil or steel plate at a 45 degree angle to try to get the broken adapter piece to pop out.

Northern Tool is the same as Snap-On? I threw that adapter out long ago. It was only a few bucks. I figured the cost of fuel to return it was more than a replacement. I just stick with my 50 year old mil-spec Proto adapter for the tough jobs. I think I would break my body before that thing gives up!

there's nothing wrong with the snap on socket... it's just got a PRC POS adapter stuck in it... I kinda doubt snap on is going to be understanding...

Weld it out, that's the only way. We've all broken one off in the socket before

I agree, tack weld a bolt or rod to the stub, clamp the XZN bit in a vice and pull.

Or drill out the stub and tap it. Then thread a screw in and pull.
