Black Smoke--> Injection Pump

What problems in these MW injection pumps can cause constant black smoke?

Has your ALDA device been tampered with?

Does your turbocharger make factory boost pressure?

I don't think so, but I'm not sure.

I don't think it does. How to test?

This is what a non tampered with ALDA device looks like.

Here is a tampered with one.

For boost pressure the easiest way to check is to temporarily tee in a boost gauge on the boost line running between the back of the intake manifold, and the alda device.

On my car I deleted the ALDA, and took that end of the boost sensor line and ran it in through the firewall. It runs to my VDO boost gauge in my ashtray.

Don't forget injector pop pressures and timing chain elongation (after you've checked what's been suggested above)

Well, there's two. One is a motor from an 83 300SD (now in an 81). The other is someone's who I sold an injection pump to who is having a lot of black smoke and saying it's the pump.

The one I have has had the ALDA "tampered with".
How do I adjust it to stock?

You have checked the air cleaner? Some are in an unbelievable poor condition. Just removing it for a short period is an okay test. That's if it looks really bad.

Basically not enough air entering the engine it is going to smoke black. Plus hurt fuel milage and power.

Chances are the injection pump wasn't put on correctly and it is out of timing on top of it...

Going to adjust the ALDA to fully open minus a 3/4 turn.

Wouldn't surprise me. We did the drip timing but I'm saving up to buy a timing light.

Found out that the person who bought the injection pump from me had a friend "turn up" the previous pump. He removed it to do so, so I imagine he opened it and turned up the max fuel. After that pump went back on the car started gushing huge clouds of black smoke. He assumed it was just the pump and bought one from me and is still having the same problem. I told him he probably melted his pistons or did some other serious internal engine damage from extremely high EGTs.

If you are dealing with one of those "I'm gonna get 500HP out of this OM617" people, I suggest you distance yourself. Nothing you do will satisfy those people. His engine may very well be fried or still full of soot. He could have burnt up the turbo, too. That would create extra smoke but not at idle.

You have not mentioned if the smoke smells like Oil or Fuel?

If the smoke smells like Oil you likely have another problem.
