Bart and his 300D present themselves

Hello all,

My name is Bart Roelandt, 32 years old and i'm living in Belgium.

Some while ago, I purchased a W123 300D Automatic "USA" in the Netherlands.
88BHP
Automatic gearbox
Green pullman interior
Blaupunkt radio
Color: weizengelb.
Green dashboard
New engine and gearbox
ACC climate control: didn't work anymore so changed it for a "standard" heating system from a european model.

I'm wondering if it would be possible if i can find back the original owners of my car as he was delivered in the USA when he was manufactured.
There is less to go on: I only have a key with letters on it saying:

"lee's keys u village": does anybody know what this means ?

Kind regards,

Bart

Hi Bart

Welcome aboard. No idea what the words on the key mean. Could you post up a pic.

One potential option...and it's a long shot....for finding the owner is doing a Carfax search with the VIN. Put your VIN up when you've got a minute.

BTW....nice car. What town in Belgium?

That is a common American saying for a stolen car. Just kidding.

Nice ride.

I like the cassette. I've been on a cassette kick lately. Getting harder to find.

Hello all,

First of all, i'll post my vin number or chassis number:

WDB12313012194229

About my key I found back the following link:

Lee

Must be somewhere in Seattle.

It would be very nice if I could find a way to contact the American owner of my car, would be great !

I'm living in Denderleeuw, it's a place about 20 km's from Brussels.

Ps: I do suffer a problem with the trip odometer as well: it stops every time at 29.9 miles. I have to reset him and they works again till 29.9 miles... The odometer works just fine.

Thx in advance guys !

There are three locations in the United States which have a shop named "Lee's Keys" - one in Summerville SC, one in San Antonio Texas and one in Steamboat Colorado.

You must now cross reference those to Lee's Keys and the towns to see if there's a University Village shopping center in that town, so you can find out where the keys were made. This may give you some clue to the origin or the travels of the former owner of the keys and your car.

But Lee's Keys is obviously not the name of a US Mercedes dealer.

Maybe they went to the San Diego Zoo in California.

California is a different state from Texas, South Carolina, and Colorado.

Do a Google search to see if there are Universities near Steamboat, Colorado; Summerville, South Carolina; or San Antonio, Texas.

To me, the name University Shopping Center suggests it is near a University.

Hello Joseph,

I know it's a long shot but isn't there a way in the USA to find back an owner using the vin number of a car ?

Would it be a good idea to send a mail to Mercedes USA ?

Kind regards,

Bart

Previous owner information is usually not available from MB.

Some states have ways to request this data (if it was ever registered within that state) for a fee = money, and frequently it is incomplete = covering only a few years.

You could spend thousands of US-dollars for little or no useful data, and/or potentially arouse (NEGATIVE) interest from government agencies with unknown results.

The other issue is this information is much less likely to be available for an older car even if you pay for all of the searches as it simply was not recorded as often. I've done VIN checks on W123s before and not gotten any info at all.

Nice looking car. Now how did I miss this thread when it first started.

How much work was it to swap out the Evil Servo ACC unit for the manual one? What gave you the most problems. Wiring?

It has been done by members here on the Forum, but not a lot of info on it.
Swapping the two ac/heat units would be straight forward, it is just the little bits and pieces to connect.

As far as th odometer slipping or stopping, there is a Pot metal gear that slips on the shaft.
Here is a link to the Diesel Giant site showing how to repair it.

How to Repair Your Broken Odometer

He shows using a screw driver to rough up the shaft. I used a 6 inch pair of Needle Nose Vice Grips
to put in some ridges for the Pot Metal gear to bite into. Mine has worked great since the repair.
You won`t need to use the Super Glue.

If the numbered wheels get off a bit when putting it together, don`t worry about it.
I fought mine a few times, then just assembled it.

Above the number wheels are a set of grey cog wheels. File off the flat on one end of the shaft.
Pull the shaft out and take off the Cogs. move the number wheels where you want them
as you shove in the shaft and replace the Cogs.

To hold the shaft from coming out, I stripped off a short piece of wire insulation a bit smaller than the shaft.
Slip on the insulation and it will hold the shaft from coming out.

These 2 pictures show the Cogs and shaft.

Finding the original owner will be very difficult, would be cool if you could find them.
