They are identical AFAIK (apart from with or w/o trans cooler)

The proper 300 rad is wider. I'd expect the car to run a bit hotter with the 240d rad.

Both my (non US spec) 300Ds have the 240 size rad FWIW. Shared with the small petrol engines too I believe

My 1984 euro 300d also came with a 240d radiator. It was well past it when I bought the car and had to put a new 240d radiator in. I live in Phoenix, AZ and it still cools fine. If you wanted to, you could put a 300d turbo radiator in and just mount the expansion tank. I've seen several people do this.

Nissens, a Danish company, makes new radiators for 300D. I bought one for my 1983 300CD and believe it to be superior to the stock radiator.

If you find an all metal (copper/brass) N/A 300D radiator, it would be worth buying, even if it is the same price as a plastic/aluminum (new or used). Metal radiators can always be repaired/re-cored, plastic/aluminum radiators can't.

Post Metal Radiator Recoring

It really depends on where your located, the biggest thing is finding a competent radiator shop that won't cheat you nor damage it beyond repair .

It's been a couple years since I had the all metal radiator in my '84 300DC re cored, I think I paid $250 carry in carry out as I don't like other's to touch my vehicles if I can afford it .

That shop is now closed sadly .

Post Cooling System Repairs

Not sure how helpful I was there .

Unless your current radiator is leaking you'd likely be better off using citric acid and water to clean the cooling system,it's how Mercedes says to do it and works amazingly well ~ I cleaned out the cooling system of both my '82 240D and the totally clogged cooling system of my '78 300CD, it took some time and effort but they've been making Mojave Desert and Death Valley runs ever since sans any heating problems .

If you actually need a new radiator, 1800radiator sells new Taiwanese copper ones cheaply, I've had those recored with four row cores, that's the secret : make the radiator as big as possib;le and let the thermostat do all the work .

You're keeping your location a secret so begin asking around and pay close attention to who is _bad_ more than who may be O.K. .
