85 300SD heavy steering
My new to me 85 300SD has very "heavy" steering. I flushed the PS fluid and changed the filter but it made no difference. At a standstill it will turn left barely and right is almost impossible. Same while driving- left turns are easier than right. I took the steering stabilizer shock off with no improvement. Is this a pump or steering box issue or could it be alignment problem? I have not had an alignment done yet and the left front tire had wear to the cords on the inside. Is there any adjustment for the amount of power assist from the PS pump? In searching I have not found any mention of an adjustment, but those MB engineers never cease to amaze me and maybe there is an easy fix!!! (I'm an eternal optimist). Any thoughts on this? -Scott

Scott,
If there is no difference between steering the car with the motor not going & when the motor is going then chances are you have a power steering pump problem. Power steering pump failures are not that common. If it was me I would get a PS pump from a junk yard. I guess you may be able to get a kit or a change over one. It does sound like you have an alignment problem as well. Time to go over all the front end. Good Luck!!

I just replaced the tie rods on my '84 300sd, and the alignment is awful, it isn't impossible to turn, but it is definitely much harder. I wonder if there is a way to test the P/S pump to make sure it's working correctly before replacing.

Scott, if you notice more power assit one direction and not the other my guess is the pump is OK. It is comon on 126's for the springs in the reaction valve in the gearbox to break. When broken will affect turning one direction or the other. The springs are not available, the box would need to be replaced.
Good luck, Chris |

Every time I think I know all there is to know about these cars something new comes up. The cool thing is that usually quite a few people on this forum have already figured out how to fix whatever problem I may have. Thanks-Scott

It looks like its the springs for said valve that are the issue, explained in the first post, fourth paragraph here.
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/tech-help/249518-just-talked-chris-%40-c-m-hydraulic-good-info-here.html I can't be sure this is the problem, of course. Looks pretty likely though. |

Could be a steering box and/or pump issue, but since the car is new to you does it look like the steering box has been adjusted as in possibly too tightly? Don't rule out bound up steering linkage e.g., idler arm or suspension e.g. ball joints. Disconnecting at the pitman arm and turning the wheels with the car lifted would help isolate/diagnose.
Good luck and keep us posted!

A tight steering box won't cause heavy steering, it will make you constantly over correct and overshoot your steering input.

Of course after 8 years one would think that the problem has either long since been solved or given up on...
