What years transmissions will swap into '87 300D wagon?

I have a very nice condition '87 300D Wagon, really like the car. Am lucky that I found a sedan with 100K less miles, good running engine with the "22" head, rough chassis. Last year, I swapped that engine in when I started having issues with the original "14" head engine in the car. At that time, the tranny was leaking some, so I had that addressed during the swap.

Well the engine is running great! But the tranny is leaking again, 365K mi on it. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I did not keep the trans from the sedan, it shifted poorly, anyway.

What years W124 trans will swap in? I have a chance to buy a decent running 91 300D sedan for cheap. I hate to kill that car for the trans, but I would rather keep my wagon running. Will a gas engine trans swap in, or does the trans need to be from a diesel chassis?

Thanks for any input,

Robert
