motor mount engine bracket

I have an '87 190 TD that has been making some vibrations during extreme turning but otherwise smooth running. While I was attempting to change out the vacuum shut off valve (unsuccessful to date--couldnt get the plastic collar on the electric plug adjacent to the valve, to turn and release the plug) and as I was swearing and looking down into the engine, I noted the driver side motor mount bracket broken. This is the bracket that is on the engine block. It is broken right through the bolt hole. Whaaaaat? I don't see this part advertised on the parts lists. Or is it something that has to be welded?? While you contemplate, how do I get the @#$%#$% collar on the electric plug at the front of the IP to release without breaking it??? Without that removed, I cannot get to the back bolt on the shut off valve.

I would suggest looking around at a Pull A Part type of place to find the engine mount but on the same hand I imagine a good welder can take care of it too.
Can't help with the electrical plug thing.

WorldPac probably has the bracket. If not, a junkyard will surely have one. Dealer will, too, if you don't mind the cost.

It will idle somewhat smoother after you replace it.

Harvey:

Replacement is fairly easy if you have a floor jack. Simply place the jack under the engine oil pan with a board between (so you don't punch a hole in the pan...) and lift enough to take the weight off the mounts. Unbolt the mount (don't know whether there is a bolt through the top or from the bottom, you can see yourself, I'm sure) and them unbolt arm from engine. Install new arm, replace bolt in engine mount, and you are done.

Thanks Peter. The shutoff valve is done! Didn't have to touch the ALDA as per my email. Will try to locate the motor mount and get it replaced. I don't have a lift available so willhave to use jack stands and floor jack.. A little hard on these old bones. Fortunately I have a breaker Bar, although and air ratchet would be easier if I had one. Locating the part might not be as easy since even World Pac does not have in their catologue. Will try calling them. p.s. I note that you feel the 300 td is the fastest MB diesel you've seen, but I am told that the 190 TD is faster because of its weight and smaller silouette. ?????? I guess its a moot point since I'm not likely to race this car. I will concede on that one. Thanks again. hlg

Harvey:

I suspece the 87 300D and the 87 190 D turbo would be just about the same -- the 300D has a 603 engine (six cylinder) and the 190D has the 602 (5 cylinder). That extra 0.5L of engine probably almost makes up for the extra weight.

Either way, these are road rockets for diesels -- I have lots of fun on the highway when someone does the "its a diesel, better change lanes" thing -- they never seem to get around me, somehow!

Dann:

The vacuum cutoff if the vacuum powered fuel shutoff on the injection pump. It mechanically forces the rack in the IP to reduce the amount of fuel injected to zero, stopping the engine.

To all, thanks for the help. The motor mount bracket was replaced easily with new part. Forgot to post this earlier.
