ATF in fuel
I once ran gas thru my 190D 2.2 liter engine, til it quit. After talking to two Mechanics at MBZ shops and hearing their outrageous estimates for purging the fuel system, replacing filters and oil, I decided to trust the guys that bought out the shop I used to used. For less than $250, the towed me the 16 miles to their shop, did everything the other guy said (he quoted about $850), replaced the fuel, oil, filters and blew out all the lines. Then they crossed their fingers and turned over the engine. It was pretty noisy. A friend of mine called me there and told me to put about 4 oz of ATF into the tank. I did, and we could immediately hear it quiet down.
However, there are better additives that won't smoke if you overadd, and won't heat up the injectors. I don't know about the redline . . . but if made for that purpose, I would suggest it. Also, I can never say anything bad about Lucas fuel additive, except the price. I would try the Lucas, which in my opinion is really 2-stroke additive, with an injector cleaner. I prefer it for use in my Cummins N14 engine over ATF, although my fuel tank is where I dump my excess ATF after I top off my power steering unit. |

Basics ,First
Thayer,
I would be remiss if I didn't remind you that the Basics ,Like Valve adjustment and Correct Injector "Pop Off" pressures (ALSO Compression differences between cylinders ,NOT related to Valve Adjustment) WILL NOT BE CORRECTED BY ANY ADDITIVE... Redline,Lubri-Moly,Etc.,Etc. So if you have one of those underlying Mechanical problems and the Redline, etc.Didn't provide the relief expected or anticipated ,the tendency would be to blame the lack of results on the Additive rather than the Lack of Maintenance.

The Plot thickens
JEBalles says ARI is no longer around.
'Did someone "Take Out a Contract" on him for asking about ATF-as-Fuel?

Arab Perfidy?
SD Blue,
Do either you or JEBalles have knowledge of who "Offed" ARI because he asked about ATF-as-fuel?

OPEC
Is this a conspiracy of the International Petroleum Producers to make up for lost
profits by terrorizing diesel users into additional purchases of ATF?

It may be that I am just crazy and want it to be perfect. I put about 100miles on it a day and change the oil hot and often. up till now I have only put oil in the crank case and diesel in the tank.

I use the generic 2-stroke oil from Wal-Mart. Came out 7th in the tests -- brings it to euro lubricity specs, I believe.

Are the euro specs more restrictive than ASTM D975? Do you have a reference?

ATF
As a truck driver, there are a lot of products available out there that are red, and are certified for use in the fuel tank (i.e., Marvel's Mystery Oil). Agricultural Fuel or Offroad Use Fuel has red dye in it. The fine for first time use of off-road fuel is $10K, therefore . . . if they wish to fine you, they have to take a sample and test for the chemical presence of the dye. CA tried to get me one time at their inspection station, and I pulled out the can of Marvel's (empty that I kept in my truck), and when they tried to fine me for secondary thing, in case they couldn't make the offroad use ticket stick . . . I stuck the can under thier noses, and pointed out where it said it WAS authorized as a fuel additive. They decided to give up on their harrassment of me at that point and walked away . . . and no ticket.
Incidently, on all state and federal facilities where they find such things as discarded ATF, paint thinners, etc. They are all poured into the fuel tanks at the fuel storage . . . . standard policy for years . . . so I wouldn't necessarily worry about what's coming out the tailpipe. It probably has all that crap in it anyways, from a military base cleanup . . . =)) At least the state, county and federal vehicles . . . LOL. Did anyone wonder what they do with all that special collections they do for all the checmicals? They put it in the county fuel supplies and burn it off . . . the least of the evils. ATF helped save my engine in a pinch . . . and I still do dump ATF in my tanks rather than carry around partial bottles of it. However, 2-stroke oil is better, and improves mileage, but doesn't have the injector cleaner properties. However, USA Lube, Lucas, and other such additive do contain the injector cleaner and are ultimately better for the engine, improve fuel mileage and clean the infectors without clogging or heating them up. I have used all in my MBZ, Honda CR-V and my Peterbilt. You'll find out for yourself what you feel most comfortable with. Torie |

Here is a pretty good synopsis of the situation...
http://www.enertechlabs.com/Ultra_Low_Sulfur_Diesel_Facts.htm
This was written in 2006. What many people are saying now, like Craig, is that the intervening years of use of ULSD treated to a minimum 520 level has not resulted in a flood of engine failures. This does not mean there are not superior approaches based on quality versus cost. The letter is long but I suggest reading it through completely. |

Ya know That's why i posted a link.
This post is way too out of hand. A post from 2000, the originator isn't here any more. And fuel specifications have changed. The Mercedes company of 2000 isn't the same company today. (And that goes for the quality also). FLAME SUIT ON!!!

No need for a flame suit. There was a locked thread just a couple years back on this and then another thread started. Craig participated in those threads too.
