Anyone replace a/c with ackits.com compressor?

I need some advice from anyone who has replaced their a/c compressor with one from ackits.com. I just purchased and installed an R4 type compressor from ackits.com. After bolting everything up and prior to tightening the adjusting bolts I attempted to put the belt back on. It's not fitting, I measured my old compressor pulley and the new one, the new one is slightly bigger. I have the adjuster loosened as far as is goes and it won't go on. If I can get a larger belt without sending the compressor back I'd rather do that. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Todd

I asked a sales member from ackits.com and received this reply:

"The best thing to do is get a bigger belt. We have not come across this but this is the compressor that this application calls for now. GM may have re-issued a new part # from the older # that could be the reason for the longer belt!"

How much bigger is the new pulley? They have made several different clutches for the R4 comp.
Are you putting the belt on the comp. first and then spinning it on the crank pulley? This way is easier.

I had the same problem with a brand new A/C Delco compressor I ordered from ackits. New stiff German belt, and new compressor = tight fit. We put the belt on the compressor as much as it would allow and gave the starter a quick turn with the ignition key. Belt jumped onto the compressor, happy day!

It's tight to the point that I don't feel comfortable using the "bump start it on" method. The pulley is about 3/4" longer measuring across. Thanks for the help guys.

putting a v-belt on halfway and then forcing it on usually tears some of the tensile fibers near the pitch diameter. The belt permanently stretches and deforms slightly, runs less smoothly and does not last as long....but of course, you all knew that already, right?

I don't think the pulley was that much bigger. I was thinking maybe 1/4" in diameter.

3/4" larger in diameter or radius?

Pete is correct once again...

Also, to keep in mind, I am sure some people on this forum know how painful it is to get one's finger caught under the belt doing that ' bump the starter' deal....

OOUUUCCCCHHHHHH !!!!

I had a bear of a time getting the OE AC belt onto my wifes compressor. Oddly enough its a GM compressor. PO must have changed it at some point. I found a crowbar to be very helpfull in getting the compressor over far enough to slip the belt on. Once over the ridges on the pully I had to tighten everything down.

Diameter, actually closer to 1/2" larger. When I replaced the belt last winter it was a tight fit with the old compressor. I even tried by taking the three bolts out, putting the belt over the pulley and then replacing the three bolts back in but the belt was way tight. It was so tight that I thought I put in back in wrong, I rechecked everything and didn't see anything obviously wrong with my installation. I'll swallow my pride and let the father-in-law (Mercedes Master Tech) look at it to make sure I didn't make a bone head mistake. I don't see how it can go on any other way though. Thanks again for all the help guys.

If he wasn't a Master Tech I definately wouldn't own a 2.3-16.

That G.M. compressor is not odd to be found on a 123. They had that R-4 compressor or a York. I prefer the York, though.
