All the times I have listed are from DBAG (good o' Daimler-Benz).
Times are "Acceleration by shifting through from 0-100kmh(2 occupants)".
David the C280 104 motors I have as 0-100kmh in 8.5 seconds. Makes no difference if it's the 4 speed or 5 speed trans, even though the rear axle ratio went to 3.07 with the 5 speed, time is the same. Yours is a 2.87:1 ratio.
Michael I have as correct with 6.1 seconds, top speed listed as 250kmh. I imagine the figures may vary by who is driving and the climatological conditions and mean altitude at the time.

A 560SEL is only supposed to do 0-60 in 7.4 seconds, my 420SEL is a little under 8.5 so I would be very surprised if the 300 could do 7.5. The pre 86 380SEL was good for 0-60 in 10.5.

I have owned four MBs with standard transmisions.I find that almost all Mercedes are pretty slow off the line. The 300e 5 speed
almost 10 sec. 0-60,190e 5 spd 8 sec, 190 16v 7.5 sec,
300D 15 minutes. but to the 50-100 mph is where its at right.
The 16v 50- 100 3 sec. same with the others. I can't count the number of times get smoked off the line but once up in the rpms
the mercedes is one of the fastest cars.

Any big-engined domestic or hyperactive ricey POS held together with binder twine can cause serious ego-bruising from stop-light to stop-light...I don't go for the bait.

It takes competent engineering and meticulous build quality to hold a car to the road at warp speed for hours on end. :p

I've got the original sales brochure for the UK W126 from 1988, it doesn't include 0-60 times, but I've got the top speed and power info:

300SE / L : 188bhp / 131mph

420SE / L : 231bhp / 138mph

500SE / L : 265bhp / 146mph

560SEL : 300bhp / 156mph

Zooooommm !!!!!!

My 1979 300 CD Diesel gets 0-60 in......

17.3 SECONDS !!!

The fastest I've ever gone was 97 mph.

Its a good thing there's a headrest to prevent whip-lash.

But those ol' diesels were never intended to jump out of the stating gate. They were built to trot happily for very long periods of time.

Hi guys.

Mine is supposed to do 0-62mph in 7.5s. It's a close ratio stick shift, but i seem to leave it in first for too long, and end up losing momentum. I've had my foot on the floor in Germany last year, clock said just a touch over 150mph. Not sure how accurate that is though. I had tanked with super unleaded too (98 octain). On my own, third tank full of fuel and a small suitcase in the trunk. Top speed is OK, but getting there can take some time. . . . .

Ohh yeah, it's a 300CE-24 Sportline with about 235bhp.

Can someone tell me, does the W124 6-cylinders weigh in the vicinity of 1400 to 1500 kgs? Its alot less than the newer models I think. My car has 142kw or 194hp and runs on premium fuels. Id imaging the 0-100 times are somewhere between 8 and 9. Like someone previously mentioned, all the mercedes I have driven or owned, has a numbness to the throttle input which can be a bit annoying. Some may say that this leads to less abrupt take off, but my 94 E280 takes off with a big surge, mainly because it s a first gear start. In the wet it is so easy to spin.

Also, do people here here agree that in gear acceleration of the 6-8 cylinder Mercs is head above shoulders over alot of other cars? I have raced against other cars from about 80km/h onwards and the car can outrun quite a few others.

Hi Christian.

I've got my MB manual here, the empty weight of the 6 cylinder models (W124) is as follows, for cars sold in Germany with standard specs:

300E - 1420kg, 300E-24 - 1480kg, 300CE - 1420kg, 300CE-24 - 1480kg, 300E 4MATIC - 1540kg.

I agree with your other point about stop/start acceleration. Mine isn't all that good, but when moving, there isn't much to touch it. A lot of the smaller cars in Europe with the 2.0 litre engines are fast off the mark, but they don't get far before I start reeling them in.

'Mushdroom' was suprised that I could get 150mph out of mine, not sure how accurate the speedo is on mine, but he was saying his had problems getting to 120 mph. Do you know if these models in the USA are de-tuned, and how do they perform in Australia?

The Octaine levels of fuel here are 95 and 98. Normally I use 95, as 98 is a lot more expensive and not really that much better!!

Hi there,

Im pretty sure that the US models are detuned dont know why but.... maybe for emission restrictions who knows. In Australia, im guessing that they are close to european models. Ive had my E280 for 4 months now and its been great. I run 98 octane premium fuel here and its so much better than regular. Ive had the car showing 225km/h and that was it. It got there very quickly. Ive just came out of a C200 and this thing is a rocket compared. Its not very impressive off the line and 90% of the time I get my backside kicked by 1.8litr cars. But then when 60 clicks hits, watch the speedometer rise. A seemless surge all the way to 225km/h with only a punctuated change in engine note and gear change. I mean its not a rocket ship but the way it does it is still amazes me

Hi Christian.

MB claim the E280 is quicker upto 60mph than the E320!! When I had mine flatout the speed was reading about 245kph. Didn't spend too much time looking at the speedo though!! had other things on my mind
