Talking So old I may have done this before

I am 77 years old. Have a 1988 560SL. First one was a brand new 190SL in 1955. eventually had 5 more of these. Several 230 250, 280SL's a300 gullwing (briefly) a 450SL, and now the 560. Seems like I've been hooked for a long long time. Probably some in there I forgot.

Well, these things have a tendency to multiply – or so I have found out. But let me start with the beginning; while in college I drove a cab – in Europe – to make a couple of extra bucks. As you might know MB is widely used as cabs in Europe and I was lucky enough to work for an owner of 3 W124 (250D and 2 300D) so I got to drive a lot of miles in MBs before I was 25. I have always promised that I would get one for myself when I could afford it so last summer I got a new W211 (E500).

Happy as could be my wife came to me and told me that her car at the time was dying and she thought that we should start looking for a new for her. One that would allow her to ‘haul’ stuff as she put it. I started looking and found a ’99 W163 (ML430) for about $11K of a MB dealers lot with just one owner. All service was done at that dealer so I got a chance to look though the service records and the previous owner had all service done with more than due diligence. The car drives as a champ. That was the second MB within less than a year.

Do you all remember Dallas the soap? Bobby was driving a R107 and ever since that series I have been hooked on the body style and look. When I got the W211 I also joined the MBCA (Mercedes Benz Owners club of America) and ran into a great bunch of people and several had R107’s. Well, to say the least that didn’t help at all! I introduced my wife to the 107 and she also thought that it looked very nice and after she got to drive one she was hooked and I got permission to buy one(!)

I found a Diamond Blue ’87 560SL in Florida a couple of month ago (less than a year from getting the W211) and got it for $8500. Since it landed in my driveway I have adjusted the mixture, changed the chain and rails, oiler rails, motor mounts (all 3), front and rear subframe mounts, cold start valve, plugs & wires, rotor and cab, valve cover seals and stuffs I have forgotten.

My problem now is that if these things continue to multiply at the rate they have done so far I am going to run out of garage space. Anyway, I am enjoying motoring in the 107 and realize that I should have gotten one a long time ago.

My age? – well, if you use the 560 as a starting point I am only 21!

Bought our '72 350SL 18 yrs ago as a mid life crisis (50) toy.

At that time it had done 124k miles. Now has 145k on clock. Not exactly a daily driver!

Have had a few problems - mainly cracked exhaust manifolds. Other than that, just upgrades like new leather, mats and a recent DIY tune up that first went wrong but finally worked out (see other thread!).

Used as sunny day car and back up when one of the other two Benzes are in for service. (an '85 diesel and a '98 E-class)

Well my story is a little different. I am 59 now always wanted one but you know how it goes , the family comes 1 st and there was always a new pair of jeans to buy for the kids, and a new lawnmower. But when they crashed into the towers i was in the hospital with lukemia (my brother saved my life with a perfect match bone marrow) cause i only had 3 years to live. I'm 6 yrs free now and beat the sucker. So anyway i'm in the hospital with nothing to do and told my brother 'when you come next time to visit me bring me an Auto Trader". Like i said i always wanted one and found one and a real good one . So i tell my wife " i'm buying a Benz" But she didn't believe me. So i'm not out of the hospital for more then 3 months , don't know if i'm gonna die from one day to the next and a cash in a mutual fund and and come driving up with the '86 Sl . Well did crap hit the fan. So i said "women i've always said i'm gonna get one and if i don't make it through this lukemia i'm gonna go in style "and that was the end of it.She's alright now cause so many people have commented on the beauty of it and how there are a classic roadster. New owner at 49

Just bought a 1988 560sl as a toy for myself to replace the Harley. Always wanted a convertible and didn't fit in a Corvette without hitting my head. I just turned 49 in July, but I prefer to think I'm still 19 with 30 years of experience.

my story

After 4 marriages and 4 divorces.....I finally realized what I was doing wrong!! Slow learner ...... that was 3 years ago....now very happily single.

To celebrate 3 years of not paying a divorce lawyer, I bought myself a red 1997 SL500 mint with only 28,000 miles. Sold my 1998 E300 Turbo-Diesel that I have driven since new....58 soon and the SL makes me feel a little younger......no, a lot younger.

Life is so very short. We are here for a short time so why not a good time?

62, just bought my '96 500SL. It will fill the slot previously occupied by my '88 BMW M5 (which, incidentally, now is for sale) while making my wife happy, since it's a ragtop and an automatic.

Hi,
I'm 36, this is my first MB, but "anniversary" 25th car overall. Never owned a convertable, either, but always wanted to.
The beast is triple black 1997 SL600 (V12) with 40K on it. This car is simply unlimited, and does put a smile on my face every time I get into it.
Now, I wish I could leave my dog babysit the kids, and hit the road with my honey 'good old times' style...

Cheers to all,

Exclamation

35 years young. Just purchased a 1993 500SL for $7600 It definitely needs a lot of care and love.

Three questions:

How do I open the gas tank lid?

How do I pop the hood open?

Is there a way to disable/disconnect the passenger side airbag?
