CDI Engine Oil initial change

Questions re: 2008 GL320CDI:

I've always heard that it is a good idea (at least in the good old days) to change oil at 1000 miles (after break-in). Nothing in manual about it of course (10k first change) and I have read that these engines are "run-in" at the factory and also that extended oil use is necessary for proper break-in.

Any insights on this from anyone? Everything else being equal I would rather change early (I just crossed 1K). I have the Mobil 1 Formula M oil and filter and just went and took a look-see for the filter housing (in the dark with my flashlight) and nothing looked familiar (I pulled the engine top off). Can anybody help me narrow down my search? As I suck my oil out I am hoping it is somewhere easily accessed that I just missed.

Any other advice on this car would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The oil filter is at the left (right front as you stand in front of the truck and look at it) front top of the engine. You do have to remove the plastiuc engine cover to access it; and it requires a special wrench to remove and properly torque it when reinstalling.

I'm with you on the oil changes. Mine w/filter were done at 1K, 5K, 10K, 15K, 20K, 25K and 30K. Many will say "overkill", but it makes me happy; and my engine's not complaining either.

You've heard wrong.

The breakin oil should be retained for the factory specified 10K miles.

Application of American car mythology will get you nowhere with a Mercedes.

Perhaps so, but all Mercedes I've owned have never complained or let me down because I changed the oil too frequently; and, if I remember correctly, there was a very big court case and settlement on engine problems because owners did follow the original - now changed - MB recommendations.

That factory supplied "breakin" oil is the same oil that is recommended for routine oil changes.

Thanks.

Found it. Looks like where a power steering fluid reservior should be. Very convenient though. Part number for the filter cap socket for anyone coming behind me is 642-589-00-09-00.

Any info/documentation on this "break-in oil" would be interesting.

Thanks again.

That MB branded socket is extremely expensive. Hazet makes one that is much cheaper. P/N: HZ2169-11; and these folks tend to be lower priced and have less of an "attitude" than the supplier in Tennessee:

http://www.zelenda.com/Hazet/hazet.html

It's not on their website, but send them an email for price and availability.

Factory fill on the CDI motors is Fuchs Titan GT1 5w30 (MB 229.51).

In other words, the same type of oil that is used for maintenance at future oil changes; i.e. not a breakin oil.

Any official MB information - not forum gossip - on this?

That is the OE factory fill on all of the MB diesels that require "229.51" spec oil!

Fuchs provides 98% of the factory fill lubricants that goes into MB's! (and over 90% of new BMW's as well)

Sure, official MB information says to change oil every 10K miles.

Your information is "forum gossip," too--just not as informed.

Dribiwire in this link http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w211-e-class/1304532-oil-change-siphoning-w211-3.html#post2246550 says the factory fill oil is Fuchs Titan 0w30, NOT 5w30! Although the Mobil product is approved by M-B for use, it is NOT the same as the Fuchs. It is likely the additive packages are necessarily different due the different service conditions and engine needs during break-in.
