Once a thread gets to be 40 pages long, how often does anyone look at pages 4-36? You can't go to the middle of the thread. You must start at either the beginning or the end and work either rearward or forward, respectively. As a practical matter, threads of this length are not all that valuable unless you've got a couple of hours on your hands.

O.K., I have a suggestion. (I might add it's nothing short of genius!)

Anytime you get the urge to delete something, why don't you just lock the thread instead. Say ... for 48 hours. That would prevent the offending parties for 'egging it on' as well as alerting the rest of us as to what will not be tolerated. Everyone would have time to "cool off" and maybe eliminate, not only errant button pushing, but also allow us to return to civility. And in the end, isn't that what we all want?

That was suggested and dismissed by the moderator. It was locking it for 48 hours that was suggested in post #19.

Whether the post is deleted after 48 hours or not is essentially irrelevant. Once it's locked, it'll slide down page 1, onto page 2, and into oblivion never to be found again without a determined effort.

Cap'n, Brian, you two start getting along or at least add each other to your "ignore" lists or appropriate action will be undertaken presently.

Cap'n, the only thing you're going to be doing with that lantern is holding it a little to the left or right for me so's I can see what I'm doing.
