In the beginning, I was referring to the fact that this is not news.

Now I have to pose the question of:
What can this possibly accomplish? One could say that she is raising awareness to this country's "housing crisis". But anyone who wasn't already aware that people live in little crap holes (for whatever reason) is obviously too stupid to help the problem.

So, if it's not raising awareness, it could be exploitation. Playing on the emotions of her "army of housewives", as someone eloquently put it, who will watch her heartbreaking story of the poor and abused and buy Downey fabric softener because Downey paid the network for commercial time during the Oprah show. The network in turn can charge more for commercial time, and as a result pay more to Oprah to manipulate people's emotions.
It's all crap.

If she wants to help she should donate her "team of security guards" to an inner-city high school for a year, see if they can help remove graffiti and turn in drug dealers. And for a nice change, not whorishly seek out publicity for her good deed.

Flanked by private security guards she will hardley be getting the real...."In da Hood" experience...as its highly unlikely she wil lhave a crack addict climb in her window to rob her....or face a home invasion.

I don't know about that. I remember an Attorney General named Ed Meese who said he didn't think there were very many homeless people in this country. Now, Meese is a pig, so I wouldn't put much stock in what he says, but I think there are plenty of people in this country who need to be reminded that we have a really screwed up housing situation in this country.

You also need to remember its not the rich people that created the crime problems that exist....People in "Da Hood" got nobody to blame but themselves for the crime problems....after all its not rich white kids from suburbia that is there commitiing the crime.

I don't disagree that there is a problem with housing. But what do you call a problem that has no solution? Oprah will not succeed in fixing anything, it cannot be done by anyone except those faced with the problem.

"Moving on up, moving on up, to a deluxe apartment in the skyyyy."

I see it everyday, I work in most of Denver's "inner-city" public schools. And although I come across as a conservative I am not in agreement with BHD on this issue. I feel bad for these kids, but before they can be helped, they need to show that they will help themselves.

So who is creating the crime in the "hood" if you disagree with me then you must think its outsiders doing it....Who dumps the trash...who is in the gangs....who is doing the graffitti and the other vandalism.....

Its the people in the hood....they have no respect for things....or for themselves....

Being poor does not equate with being a dirty criminal slob.

The inner city mess is purely a result of the people who live in the inner city...

Home is what you make it....and we see what they have made it. THe crime statistics show it all.

I don't disagree with this.

I disagree with this broad generalization. Most of the people in "da hood" do have respect for things and themselves. They live their lives just like you and me.

Not having the means to get by does lead to crime in those persons who are too weak to go out and earn said means the honest way. It's also a population density problem, if you are going to fall back on statistics. More people in the same area=more crime.

I am not defending criminals or hood rats, I just think that there is much more good than bad in most of these neighborhoods. I see it.

I think if most people in the "Hood" had respect for preoperty etc....they hood would be far cleaner.....and the toublemakers would be quickly turned in...which is NOT whats happening... In DC "HOODS" someone can get shot in the middle of the street at noon...and nobody see's a thing.....even if lots of people were there at the time. Fact is the good people are in the serious minority.....and the troublemakers are in the vast majority. And they are easy to spot by how they dress and how they act....

ummm no.

Do you go on a lot of garbage runs in your neighborhood? Or do you (or your HOA) have the means to pay someone to pick it up? Don't worry, I know the answer.

You know what you read, your scope of the situation is limited by your distance from the problem. We've been down this road before, you and I. And I don't think that all of this bears rehashing. I just made the mention that we tend to agree on most subjects. But quite obviously not on this one.

Good people are the majority EVERYWHERE. You are just letting a couple trees in baggy pants block your view of the forrest.

Now I really regret the few minutes I spent reading this thread. I do however have a curiosity now on how the ignore feature works.

Check out where the Washington DC navy yard is...(southeast DC) and where Bolling Airforce base / Anacostia Naval annex is (Anacostia) the two worst places in DC.....and PLaces I have to drive to frequently....

Trash I am talking about is garbage....discarded detris in the streets, on the sidewalks...in the Alleys....Trash recepticals are picked up... but the slobs toss the stuff on the street.

Take a look at the slobs in the baggy pants....hanging out on streets all hours of t he day and night....when jobs are availible...if they took the effort to put normal clothes on....and go apply for the job. But hanging out is more important...and causing trouble...

Funny how people who can't even speek english find jobs...yet these clowns can't seem to find them.

Hello Mister Cleaver, and Mrs. Cleaver you're looking especially nice today. Are Wallace and Theodore home?
