I think they would'nt be looting anymore and people who are in dire need of rescuing could be rescued rather than shot at.

Yes, my apologies. My comment was uncalled for. It's just frustrating to hear people say they would shoot fellow Americans for simply looting. The one's that are armed and shooting should be shot themselves.

You can get as politcal as you want, I voted for Bush so I'm pretty pissed off because I did think that he was/is a crisis president. Just like ship with an idiot at the helm the sailors has to take charge to save the cargo.

yea, I'm pissed and have been for sometime now.

I agree with the second part. How would you stop lawlessness and mayhem?

I don't know if you're really new or not but if your are you will find that you can be polarized with others but have a good time sticking each other. There's no need for theatrical BS.

Not all looters are shooting at the authorities. You are lumping all looters into one catagory. Simply not the case. It's easy to talk tough on your computer about shooting people.

I wish I knew. Opening our hearts and wallets can't hurt. I voted for Bush and I am shocked at his "deer in the headlights" attitude. ABC news radio just said that some police officers have been caught looting.

I can answer that one, Ft. Polk is 4 hours by MB away and consists of some of the best trained soldiers is the world, I've gathered that some of them have been sent to NOLA for leadership of the NG but are instructed to not interfere directly with anything. 1000 of those troops could take care of the situation in a day or two and thats a quote.

With Martial Law declared they can legally act but red stained flood waters will be bad for the news images.

NOLA police are a mixed lot and they have had mixed leadership. The current mayor is one of the good guys and he appointed some good folks. But it is going to take 100 years of men and women like him to turn that nut-house around.

Recently they jailed a district judge (with whom I went to high school--go figure) for corruption and have indicted another. They worked with attorneys to fix cases. Several years ago they had a cop who murdered several other cops over apparent drug turf.

The people all think NOLA cops are corrupt. Just enough of them are that it makes people not trust police worth a damned. And now the city reaps the rewards.

IMO, they need NG out there in force to stop the looting and other crimes. A masive demonstration of power is needed to intimidate the bad people and give confidence to the many. many good ones who just desparately need help.

In situations such as what is happening in NOLA it's not about the tennis shoes, et. al. it's about the resources that are now being used to find these guys and stop them. Add to that the fact there are no jails right now, they are underwater, so anyone captured has to be guarded in the open - thus more manpower used. All those folks involved in stopping the looting and guarding the prisoners could be out finding someone who needs help, evacuating someone, making things better in general for people in need. When given these circumstances I'd rather the aid go to the people in need; they are innocent. The folks looting are not. It isn't easy to think that from a keyboard. I hope I'm never faced with that situation. I feel sorry for those in NOLA right now that are. Fact is, you have to do the most expedient thing to save those who deserve to be saved. Right now that means shooting looters. Hopefully, they will stop after the first few are removed from the picture. However, as communications are none existant there I doubt it.

WOW, has this thread fork off in a different direction.

Unfortunately, I also beleive in the "Shoot'um" concept, possibly more figuratively, but I don't think I'd have a problem pulling the trigger.

Let's look at two things,
A guy interviewed on the news talked about how his mothers house was looted, took tons of valuable -- both monetarily and heirloom -- jewelery.
He actually confronted the looters who laughed in his face.

Shoot a few ...
If there are a hundred looters, and 99 know they will get away, and one might, just might be told to put it back, why worry.

If the hundred looters know at least 1 will get shot ... how will that change their attitude.

What you have is pack (not gang) mentality, someone has to take control. Better the cops / armies ...

I learned earlier today that only congress can declare martial law. Not sure if that's a fact, but if so, those guys haven't yet returned from their vacation yet.

I did see that several Army bases had been put on standby, maybe this is in anticipation of martial law being declared.

This is a civilized society, we live in the 21st century the last time I checked. The civil war ended a looooong time ago, bro. What do you think would happen if looters were shot? More civil unrest, that's what. Ever heard of putting people in jail first? Even some of the police have been found looting. Think they should be shot?

You claim you have been here a loooooooong time. I am so impressed.

Just Ignore me if you want. I don't need respect from someone get's insulted because I didn't agree with you about shooting looters on site. I guess that's not a useful contribution in your eyes.
It's not your opinion I have a problem with.... It's your delivery. Particularly the "get real " tag at the end of it.

I'll defend to the death your right to express your opinion. I'm ALL about freedom of speech.

But when doing so in a group that you're new to, it's usually a good idea to at least start out with a little bit of tact, and earn the respect of your new debating buddies. That's all.

Getting back to the important stuff...... What the LOOTERS are doing is what's barbaric and uncivilized. I can't blame people for taking food, water, medicine, etc.... Those are survival items. But nobody needs a damned surround-sound system and a Rolex and an AK-47 during the aftermath of a CAT 5 hurricane!!! These guys are opportunistic criminals and predators, and NOTHING more. Some of them are even shooting at the rescuers, for chrissakes! They are showing their true character, and in my opinion, shooting them would be doing society a favor.

Mike

Thats the reason I'm pissed, nothing is happening. The news says that martial law has been declared but who know anything right now.
