Actually, I didn't mind agreeing with you on something. (we were posting at the same time.)
I *do* agree that we shouldn't be on the hook for where other people live. But if we're going to waste the money in Iraq, I'd rather see it go to the people of OUR country. I guess that is my point. So we actually do agree. MedMech, you can dig into me all you want, you're just pee'd off because you know you couldn't debate me and hold position for any amount of money.

In answer to several people's questions early on, including my own...
for full article http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,168203,00.html "...Offers have been received from Russia, Japan, Canada, France, Honduras, Germany, Venezuela, Jamaica, Australia, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Greece, Hungary, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Mexico, China, South Korea, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, NATO and the Organization of American States, the spokesman said. Still, Bush told ABC-TV: "I'm not expecting much from foreign nations because we hadn't asked for it. I do expect a lot of sympathy and perhaps some will send cash dollars. But this country's going to rise up and take care of it." "You know," he said, "we would love help, but we're going to take care of our own business as well, and there's no doubt in my mind we'll succeed. And there's no doubt in my mind, as I sit here talking to you, that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city." Historically, the United States provides assistance to other countries experiencing earthquakes, floods and other disasters. Germany, which was rebuilt after World War II largely by the U.S. Marshall Plan, offered its help in a telephone call to Rice. "The German Government is prepared to do all that is humanly possible," the German embassy said. In his call, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer assured Rice of Germany's solidarity with its American friends in a difficult time, the embassy said. Israeli Ambassador Daniel Ayalon called Wednesday at the State Department to offer condolences and assistance. Israel is the largest recipient of U.S. aid, about $2.2 billion a year." ------ In addition I saw, forget where, that there are many, many corporations that are contributing >$1M plus matching employee contributions. It appears that the charities and aid are mobilizing. I'm sure not quick enough for the folks who need it. I'm curious, what kind of emergency planning/disaster preparedness did NOLA have prior to this happening? It appears that Houston and other parts of Texas had very good planning as they are now using it to aid the New Orleanites, if that's the word.

I'm happy to admit that I'm pleasantly surprised, and I must retract some of what I said earlier about not holding my breath waiting for offers, etc..... The skeptic in me wants to wonder if some of it is just political a$$-kissing.... and to wonder if they are just putting on a nice show for the media, since they know we aren't really in dire need of the money....at least not nearly to the degree that many nations would be, after such a catastrophe....... But the optimist part of me would like to believe that perhaps some of the help we've given to other nations in the past was appreciated more than I thought. Regardless, it's nice to see. ![]() Mike

Nationalistic pride should be no part of this. Getting help to the people ASAP should be the first priority. The US should have and still should ask for help. Japan made the same mistake with the Kobe earthquake, "saying they could handle it" and people suffered and died as a result. With all the help in the world you will not be able to get to the people soon enough. Spiral |

Haven't heard that from other countries, they have just offered help, period. To me that was nice to see as well. I don't think we'll need it but it's the thought that counts. We'll make it through this.

WASHINGTON — In a turnabout, the United States is now on the receiving end of help from around the world as some two dozen countries offer post-hurricane assistance. from a little further on in the piece: ""You know," he said, "we would love help, but we're going to take care of our own business as well, and there's no doubt in my mind we'll succeed. And there's no doubt in my mind, as I sit here talking to you, that New Orleans is going to rise up again as a great city."" the "he" above would be Pres. Bush. BTW, The Rice in the headline would be SecState, I doubt she'd come out with that if the big guy didn't ok it.
