Pan-X

I think Panatomix-X has been out of production for years. I'm not even sure Kodak still makes B&W IR film anymore. I know Kodabromide and Kodabrome RC paper are history.

Kodak

You can still buy Kodak B&W film (TMAX and Tri-X) I currently use TMAX. However I believe that Kodak has decided to stop making B&W paper.

I think ilford will still be a safe bet for your B&W supplies for a few more years. B&W photography is a joy for me. I started developing when during a tough time at work (too much work, not enough resources). There was nothing like sitting in a dark room after a 12 hour day in front of a computer. I have thought about going digital and buying a nice DSLR but I don't think I'll enjoy sitting in front of photo shop more then spending time in a dark room.

i agree 100%. I used to print with Oriental Seagull #4 very high contrast and at the time the only paper you could buy that had that much silver in it. Ilford will corner the market on paper, i don't know if Agfa is still producing, I liked printer on their Portrega paper, nice warm tones. Digital doesn't do it for me with my personal work.

You guys should just buy a digital camera. You can get a pretty nice one at WalMart for under $100 now, and you can have full color prints made right there in the store in just a few minutes. Much less work.

part of the process is producing a beautiful b&w print that is technically correct. i can't get that on a computer, besides I work with a digital camera all day long.

I agree with you completely, Alabbasi! Of course, I have a vested interest in people loving darkroom photography. Designing and building darkrooms is what I do for a living. We are also dealers for Kodak, Fuji, Illford, etc., etc.

I miss the darkroom I used to have in my old house. Keep thinking I might build another one, but now I may just put one in the next house I move to.

I was just joshin'. If I had the time and money, I would shoot film, too. I had one of those east German Leica copies that took bee-yoo-tee-ful pictures, but I have to admit that the convenience of digital got the better of me and I sold it. I miss it!

Unfortunately, I've been informed by my dark room tech that Agfa has gone out of business.

I have pretty much all the equipment to build a dark room (enlarger, easels, trays etc) and Cape Cod style house with large enough closet / attic space to house one. However, as I have dogs, and don't want to deal with the chemicals. I find it easier to sign up for a course every semester at the local art / community college. This way you have free use of their equipment and chemicals with no clean up for around $130/semester. For anyone who has taken, developed and printed their own pictures, they should try this at least once. You get a lot of satisfaction from it.

Here are some pictures from when I first started a couple of years ago.

Of the many things, here's one of my favorites:

Floating down the Shenendoah River in a canoe with close friends simply enjoying each other's company and the scenery.

Oh.... and a cold beer in one hand.

Anyone care to guess what I'm doing this Saturday?

I have a Colex R-3 Processor. In about 6 mos to a year I'd trade it for a nice Freidan calculator or a football bat.

Hell, this was back in the late '80's when I did B&W process work, photocopying and printing.
I think 1988 was the last year I was involved with it.I know they still make Resin Coated papers but I've never used them,it was all business with me then,R.I.P.
