wow, old thread....

my take on the moral objction was that the anti-abortionists were listening to the scientist saying this was the cure to everything. If that was the case, and stem cells did cure many, many things, the danger becomes the supply. If the stem cells cure everything, the need will raise exponentially. I think their fear was that this would eventually lead to less than moral ways to obtain these cells. The Bush group view life at the moment of conception, and the rights to the body of that concieved being belong to the soul that resides in that body. At what point could the line be drawn to use these cells that would protect these souls forever? Thats what they were trying to do. I can see their point, but I also feel if the cells are from a source, not a created source they should be used. But what moral ground would allow a woman to concieve a child and abort it for the cells to save a sibling or spouse.

I think it is the guilt thing. If a person could have an abortion with some comfort that the material could be used in curing someone or used in research for a cure, they might be less hesitant and be more guilt free. Both of which are not good for religion.

For me, the salient moral objection to embryo harvesting is the commodification of human beings. It is related to the (to me, immoral) practice of patenting genes and whole organisms.

Slavery makes a commodity of human beings and we all agree that slavery is immoral. I have yet to see anybody on the pro-abortion side advance a comprehensive argument concerning the demarkation between that which may be aborted and that which is murder if terminated.

In my opinion, the distinction is arbitrary. This does not mean that I believe any taking of human life is immoral. To me, taking human life is most effectively argued from a utilitarian point of view considered on each instance (I am not satisfied that there is a none-size fits-all solution).

Since I don't believe that there is a generalizable "good", I do not believe that governments should be involved in the decision.

I'm with you on the patent thing.
When human life begins is a pretty hard question to answer. I tend to go with the same answer to what porn is. I know it when I see it.

I use a simple guide. What does the ER doc use to determine if you are dead? If you meet the criteria, you are alive. If not, you are dead.
