Cheapest Car Bought... and What Did You Sell it for?

My First Car: '67 Toyota Corolla with 110K. Bought in '72 for $250. Sold for $25 in a bar a few months later. Bill of Sale written on a cocktail napkin. No remorse.

Bought a `65 Econoline back in high school for $350. Painted it, did the interior up like they did in those days, and sold it a few years later for $750.

1974 Vega $25. in 1980; it had 35,000 miles on it and was a total rust bucket.

Sold it for $900 a month later.
A wiring fire in the wipers burned it up.

A FREE Chevette with hail damage that looked like some one took a sledge hammer to it.
A gallon of bondo took care of those craters; sold for $700.

When I was in college I bought an 1972 Austin America for $35. It had a four speed auto trans and would only go in reverse. I bought a junkyard trans for $25 and fixed it myself. Later on the crankshaft broke, bought a junkyard crank and bearings for $25. Junkyard parts for this car was not too hard to find and most cars in the junkyard had 50k to 70k miles on them. Although this car was one of the worst cars ever made I drove it for many years.
On a dark rainy night I drove it too fast around a bend and rolled it. At the time I didn't think I could give it away but a guy driving by house saw it and offered me $200. He just bought one and needed an engine and seats. That was a lucky day.

My neighbor had a Rambler station wagon and when he bought a new car they wouldn't take it in for trade. He asked me how he could get rid of the car so I gave him $25 for it, fixed what I could without cost and cleaned it up. Sold it a week later for $100.

Mine was a 1965 Mercury Park Lane, the big 4-door sedan with the reverse-slanting power window in the rear and an acre of trunk. Bought it for $500 in 1981. Not exactly the most economical car around; I think I got 15 mpg on the highway once. But it was smooth and solid, and never failed to start.

I sold it in 1985 for the same amount to a family who needed room for their kids.

In 1984 I paid 425 dollars for a 1957 Willys CJ-5, thank you "60 Minutes" for scaring the owner into selling me that "death trap". I drove it for years and when the engine started to use more oil than fuel, I sold the Jeep to a fellow who gladly paid me 900 dollars. Which I used to "upgrade" into a 1971 CJ-5 with the factory Buick Dauntless V-6 that I paid $1000 for in 1988. Having dual windshield wipers was a big draw.

$75 for the car, $75 for the motor

In about 76 I bought a '70 Nova with a seized motor for $75. I found a Chevy 6 for $75 in a junkyard. Swapped it in and my fiance drove it for a year. We gave it her younger sister who drive it for 4 years of college. Then the spring rusted through the trunk and we scrapped it. Salt in Buffalo sucks.

i paid 75 for my 37 cheby master delux in about 1970 while in college. fiddled with it making it drivable and sold it for 375.

paid 75 for my 84 lincoln about 1993, put in a different engine, then had it rebuilt and traded it for a paint job on my hallway and stairwell in my old office building.

Paid $80 for a 1998 Cadillac Deville with 42xxx miles last year, wrecked down the right side. I put $650 into doors, a fender and paint, figure book value was $10,000, but even with the new battery I had under a grand in it. I gave it to my brother in law for a Xmas gift, he was having some problems and is a huge guy (6 ft 6, 300+ LBs) and I figured he'd at least fit in it. He loves it, but when he went to get it titled in Michigan they tried to tell him he had to pay sales tax on the retail value, which they computed at $13,000...he showed them the gift affidavit from me and they only made him pay tax on $1000.

I bought a '86 Chevy Cavalier wagon at the San Francisco towing company's abandoned/seized/towed for unpaid tickets auto auction for $325, it never looked like much and needed a muffler, cat, battery and then was pretty much OK, had it for a couple of years and then gave it away to a friend who'd helped me work on it and needed a cheap car, actually it wasn't too bad of a car and still was running when he gave it away to someone in Santa Cruz.

It was the perfect car for running around in SF because when people saw you coming, you knew NO ONE would ever argue with you over the right of way

Cheapest car is my current MB - it was a gift. I'm not even thinking about selling, because I have no idea what I'd replace it with.

It was 1976. I bought a '69 GTO 400 Ram Air, $125. Was sitting under a tree covered in bird droppings. Old woman said the mechanic told her the rods were knocking. I priced a used wrecking yard motor for $300 so, I went back the next day and aired up the tires and towed it home.
It turned out to be the starter gear stuck. New starter, good wash/wax, drove it for a yr and sold it for $1000. I should have kept it along with the 68 Chevelle SS 396 I sold for $600.
