For what it's worth, I would imagine that there are grandchildren of slaves still among us. Say a slave born in 1860 had a child at age 35 and then that child had the slave's grandchild at age 35. The grandchild would be 76 today. Doesn't seem farfetched to me.

My point is not to do the math, but to point out that we had things like slavery and government-sponsored racial discrimination for a long, long time and that the time since they were abolished is relatively short. None of this is intended to provide excuses for anyone, but I think it's important to keep in mind. Old ways die hard and I don't think that it is accurate to say that slavery does not affect anybody currently alive. For example, there are probably plenty of white Americans whose great-grandparents owned slaves. You don't think that experience affected the current generation? I would have to disagree. Speaking for myself, I would have to say that my great-grandparents' lives continue to affect me in ways that I could not articulate.

BTW, I have not paid great attention to everything Bill Cosby has said on this subject, but what I have heard from him sounds like it's right on target.

To change the subject slightly, there are probably many people alive today whose great-grandparents were alive during Thomas Jefferson's life. We have a young country.

Bot, I enjoyed reading your post.

A couple of years ago my son and I were discussing TV programs. He mentioned how it ridiculous it was for the show Friends not to feauture one single black, or Puerto Rican--this for a show that supposedly took place in NY.

Same is true for Seinfeld.

Then we talked about TV commercials, mostly from car companies and food companies (like Mickey Dees). We talked about how few commercials show blacks and whites and Hispanics mingling together in happy harmony.

And talking about harmony, how about those commercials for EHarmony (or whatever that dating service is called). Not a single mixed-race couple!!!

In the county where I practice law there is only one Black judge and only one Hispanic judge. Clearly their numbers are vastly underepresented!

The Great Society has been a great disappointment in so many ways.

I blame government for trying to shove things down peoples' throats. I can tell you that, form a personal POV, as an educated Hispanic male, Affirmative Action has been more of a burden than a benefit.

I got into a good college based on my good high school record. I got into a good law school based on my good college record. Still, I have to spend time and effort proving to others that I am "good" and not just a product of Affirmative Action!

Damn.

I assume that you are referring to that little island by NY, right?

Since the Indians sold it to the Dutch West India Company (we) and the Indians are also part of "we" then we sold it to us?

I mark all kinds of places on those forms, just to confuse and piss them off.

You integrate into the system and move on and up.

That is why I am angry at some of the most recent Hispanic arrivals. They still wish to maintain their past identity and not integrate into American life. They want the English speaking world to cater to them (i.e., ballots printed in Spanish).

Sorry BENZ-LGB,

I speak good conversational German and Dutch, and a bit of French, but the only word I understood from that was mierda.

English is the language of the US, but I have two first cousins whose mom is from Seville. They speak perfect English and Spanish. Both of their law practices are thriving because of this ability. Their primary client base is Hispanic seeking claims against workers compensation and other workplace issues.

The Spanish culture is so big now that I know it would help me to be at least conversational. At least then I would know if they are talking about me.

You polyglots maybe able to answer this question that just popped into my mind like a nitrogen bubble on a quick ascent.

Do other languages have intentional variants like English with Pig Latin?

Loosely translated from "Cuban" to English: "Damn, what sort of BS is this?"

Of course, the word "coņo" has an entirely different meaning in Spain...ask your primos from Sevilla, they will tell you.

BTW, where do they practice law, I always like to know others lawyers for referral purposes.

I think that as far as private industry is concerned, the more languages that you speak, the better for you and your business.

My son is learning to speak Japanese, which given California's location on the Pacific Rim is a very good idea. French would not be as useful to him.

I just don't like to see the government making it easier for people to stay safe and comfortable w/in their own ethnic/racial cocoons.

If he was truly concerned, he would be devising, and implementing, creative solutions to the problem. But since he has no clue, he cannot do that.

He is embarrassed by the condition, and lashes out against it in such a useless manner, because it believes that will distance himself from it. But it won't. It only makes other people ask, "Why, as a wealthy Black man, do you do nothing for your own people? Are you no better than the so-called Black Leaders?"
Rubbish.

His "rhetoric", as you call it, serves a GREAT purpose, and should be repeated by many others. There is more truth and purpose in his words than can be found in the combined words of a DOZEN other black "role models" in this country.

Obviously he IS concerned, or he wouldn't bother to speak about it at all...

How would it benefit him directly to "distance" himself from it, as you assert?...

He has already made his money... Yes, he IS a "rich guy"... And how do you think he GOT that way?.....

He did so through WORK, skill, INTELLIGENCE, and persistence.

He is leading by example.

The ones who criticize him for doing so, or for saying so, are either jealous, or too stupid and/or unmotivated to do the same, or BOTH.

He is FAR better than the "so-called black leaders" such as Jackson and Sharpton, because he is actually pointing out the REALITY of the situation. The reality that the plight of many of these "less fortunate" individuals is largely of their own doing.

He is also telling people what the solution is.... Telling people that education and individual responsibility is the way out of their situation, rather than merely waiting for a handout from someone else, or another band-aid program from the government.

And as I said before... He doesn't offer handouts or empty promises and rants like many of his contemporaries... Instead, he leads by example.

Apparently some are just unwilling to learn from his example.

Cool. I didn't know. And yes, I am crazy, but that's just one indicator. You should see my ball bearing collection.

for what it is worth, in the mid thirties right here in marion indiana a black man was lynched. about a forty mile drive from lafayette.

and the black folks had their own school here in lafayette, "lincoln" up til the sixties i believe.

and in the seventies the grand dragon (national leader) lived in greenwood indiana just on the south side of indianapolis.

and about ten years ago i observed several examples of defacto segregation in georgia when i was down there picking up an old caddy. separate chain gangs picking up trash along the road. in a restaurant i noted that all the white folks were seated along the windows and all the black folks were seated next to the wall by the noisy kitchen.

so it is still with us.

i don't know the solution but i know this.... i wouldn't want to be black.... at least not here.

oh and i agree that the welfare system as it is administered presently discuourages familys form staying together. there is no sense in that!

You're joking, right?... You seriously think this was actual, enforced "segregation" that you saw in 1996????...

I submit that it was mere coincidence, and you saw in it what you wanted to see.
