As for the Hog Dogs, the vests are pretty necessary to keep them from getting cut up by the Hogs. Sometimes the dogs have so much riggin' on 'em, they look like a parade horse. If it's a really good dog, they will have electronics such as GPS so that they can always find the dog if he gets lured a long distance away.

Uh, say Holmes, go back and read this thread from the first page and take note of who posted the OP. I've done some hunting but not a lot. I milked cows at a commercial dairy in Davie, Florida (as opposed to milking goats I guess), I've done harvest work - combines of several types and picked fruit in three states - I've worked on homesteads of friends where I gathered eggs, etc. I used to shoot medium sized birds with the son of the one of the families I lived with, looked like pheasant, for dinner up in Ea. WA. But I haven't killed large game and eaten it.

Nonetheless, I'm fascinated by the prospect of hunting wild boar. Never done it but would like to.

Hunter/gatherin' baby!

Even more funny, I'm only half kidding. I realize it would be unlikely to happen but we know that we spend way too much on maintaining prisoners. Something that would cut down on the cost of that as well as providing the sort of adventure and hands on learning that might, maybe might help a person to grow up and avoid returning to prison would be a groovy thing, man.

I'm having trouble imagining how it would be a good idea to go into the woods with a bunch of armed reprobates to catch hogs.

That thought did cross my mind. This would be for people who are going to be released in a year or two and are maybe worried that some more hardened cons might fock with them such that they get more time. It would be sort of sought after detail, with a separate prison dorm. away from the prison.

If it was a fun gig, word would get back that if you toe the line and make progress, you can go on the hog killing vacation.

People go out into the farm with convicts at Angola and the Angola inmates are some pretty tough customers. The convicts use edged tools. Hell, I'd rather have to deal with a nut carrying a club than a nut carrying a scythe or hoe. Choot'em!

Angola has had a warden and assistant warden that have done some amazing things with the inmates. They have problems, but the inmate population has a lot more choices available to them based on behavior than in the past. I have flown over Angola at low altitude numerous times. It looks like a USMC camp it's so clean and neat. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=angola+prison&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-USfficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&ei=NA20UP66DYq29QTwuoCgCA&ved=0CAgQ_AUoAA

I read an opinion once that went something like 'we have these people under our complete control for their own good and society's and it's too big an opportunity to squander.' Could be taken in a totalitarian, master race way but I think there's a higher road and it sounds like what you're describing is in that spirit.

Prison costs in California are large and the recidivism rate not good. People who get good results could do well, write own ticket, etc.

Not too bad, if the "armed reprobates" could talk the hawgs into giving themselves up.

A friend of mine owns a ranch in Texas. We have 'hunted' hogs several times.

It is easy to do. You just pick up a large bore weapon, or a .223 if you have one, and drive out into the woods. Presto! They seem to be everywhere.

Then you just start firing away. Not too sporting. It is more like pest control.

We once shot one that was blocking his gate. We had to hook a chain up to it in order to drag it away.

We tried a 9mm on them, but there was not much effect.

By the way.... I have been through Aspermont many times due to some property further to the west I have an interest in. I can understand the lure of hunting hogs since there is really nothing else to do.

That's drunken reprobates, mind you; and It's loads of fun. You might be surprised. Not that I am against it, but what would you need a gun for?

There's no need for them to be armed, except for carrying a few hobbles.

Good idea. It DOES sound like the kind of good idea that he would come up with. It's funny how prisoners released from HIS jail aren't very anxious to go back.

Yeah. Ask the Coconino County Sheriff in Flagstaff how many of his inmates are former guests of Sheriff Joe. You'll get a similar answer from the Yavapai County Sheriff.
