I strongly prefer .45ACP to 9x19 any time. I shot a Springfield XD once, and my observation was that it felt cheap, the slide rattled against the receiver, and it felt/looked clunky, sort of like a knock-off Glock. I'd take a stainless 1911 in a Commander size (4.25 inch barrel) any time, I have found that the slightly shorter barrel makes it point better for me than a gov't model (5 inch barrel) and could never hit anything with my 3.5 inch Officer's model.

I think the XD is Croatian built, which is not a big issue, but as I recall, the lockwork is set up as a variation on the Glock, with a 2-stage trigger of some sort, not a proper single action set up. I seem to recall it has no manual safety because of the 2nd little trigger. Condition 1, cocked and locked carry is my preference.

And, please stay away from KelTec...elcheapo throw away guns. I'd rather see you buy a used CZ75, or even an FN/Browning Hi-Power and get a well-engineered gun that you will keep for years.

elcheapo? i have heard nothing but good about it. out of like 60 reviews i read there was one bad. all of the people i read about had atleast 1000 rounds through it.

ill have to go to the range and shoot (rent) the xd45. that is if they have it. ive also heard nothing but good about the xd. infact, its in about every gun magazine this month.

I went with the Glock 21 and never looked back. Fired the XD a couple times and didn't care for it.

Have you considered a H&K USP 45ACP?

Haven't fired the XD. I have some experience with the Gov't model .45s and with quite a few pistols in general. My 230 grains worth suggestion is to look at the Glock. If your mitts are large enough, it's the best shooting, handling and lasting pistol out there (in my humble opinion and for a sensible amount of money). Also, unless you're dead-set on the .45, the .40 is a good choice and has a smaller frame and higher mag capacity. My other suggestion, and you may already have this covered, is to buy a good .22 semiauto pistol (the Ruger 45/22 and Mark II and the Browning Buckmark are my personal favorites). Shoot cheap and have lots of fun while still practicing the basics of marksmanship. When I go to the range, I shoot maybe 20-30 rounds of .45 (in 2 guns), about 50-75 rounds of 9mm (in 3 guns), a few .44 mag and .357 mag and 200-300 rounds of .22 (in 2-3 guns). It's easier on my constitution and lots cheaper while still being fun.

diametricalbenz:h&k is a little more than i was looking to spend.im tryin to go no more than 600.

cjlipps: i have looked at the glock and at one time was the one i was dead set on. im not sure what it is but there is somthing about the xd that draws me in. dont ask me why, but i have always wanted a 45. im not really concered about mag. capacity because the less it holds the longer it will take me to shoot a box of ammo. that why my rifle is bolt action and my shotgun is pump. i realize 22 is ALOT cheaper to shoot than any other caliber, that what my rifle is and why i buy 500+ rounds at a time for it. i only plan to shoot a box(50) of the 45 when i go shooting. i still plan to buy the 9mm later on. ill have to go compare a few guns. me and my buddy are gonna go lookin. hes looking for a 9mm for his wife to carry. keep the suggestions comming. thanks for all the responses

Go shoot both and see what you like better. Go to a gun range and rent both.

As to the ammo, reload your own.

How about the Kahr KP45/P45? They are single stack mags compared to the Glock. I have never fired one personally but heard they are good. Might be worth a look.

That's the fun of shooting sports. You can go and sample and goof around (all with safety paramount of course) with your buddies and in the end, a good time was had by all. I actually like the XD in principle and my best buddy is looking at them. One of these days I may actually get to handle one. Like the others say, rent or borrow before you buy. The fit and "shootability" of a pistol is very important and, like shoes, it's different for different people. And, worst case, you buy one and it doesn't grow on you. There is always a market for good used pistols and you shouldn't lose much money on the deal if the gun is relatively new and in great shape.
