GEICO question

so just for fun i click on the green gecko ad for an auto insurance quote.

geico wants to charge me half of what i am paying now (to state farm) for the same coverage.

i suppose being married to an accountant plus me getting my masters put in a 'safer' category. i guess it would be silly to assume state farm would actually lower my rate.

so what's the catch? is there one? would my state farm agent laugh if i asked him to lower my rate?

Jen,

Make VERY sure it is as it appears. When I played Gieco they offered me the same rate I was paying... only my premium was for ONE YEAR -- and theirs was for SIX MONTHS!!! They wanted DOUBLE.

But I *do* have two good friends that saved a bunch with them. So just double check all your numbers and go with the cheapest. Insurance is a scam, that you must have. So pay as little as you can. I also ALWAYS recommend to to people to shop the higher deductible $1500 instead of $500, etc. You'll be surprised what you can save.

I recently changed my insurance from The Travelers (after 25 years) to Liberty Mutual. They offered me the same coverage for 1/2 the price.

The Travelers folks din't seem to care, so I also changed my homeowners policy to Liberty mutual and saved 35% on that. Check around and call Liberty Mutual.

The only thing I gave up was an agent who didn't even know my name. I can live without them!

When I bought my E-320, I changed from Progressive (terrible company) and moved over to GEICO for half the price (I got quotes for rates per month)-- and that was with the addition of the new car!

I also moved from MD to VA and saved $800/year simply because I got moved out of the state and its higher rates.

What's interesting about Geico is that it is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company owned by Warren Buffet, who has a new worth of about $46 billion dollars, and Forbes Magazine ranks him as the second richest person in the world.

Warren Buffet still lives in Omaha, Nebraska, and has pledged to give his money away before his death, instead of leaving it for his children. You might recall last year that he pledged about $37 billion dollars to Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

He is easily the most successful investor in the history of the stock market.

He is a classic value investor, buying highly regarded companies at a low price.

In addition to Geico, he owns companies like Dairy Queen and Sees Candy.

An interesting link:

I've had Geico for about 8 years and I've been mostly happy with them. Getting in two accidents (neither my fault) in the last 6 months have given me a little more insight into their claims department and just as you would expect, it sucks like any other insurance company.

I'm currently without a car due to the TDI being at the body shop and since it's been there for more than 30 days Geico is insistent that they will only pay the car rental for 30 days. So much for treating long-time loyal customers better.

Their rates have always been decent and they're always looking for more discounts for me. Currently I have the married, good driver, multi-car and professional discount

I don't know how other companies handle people like us who buy and sell cars frequently, but Geico has been great. Sometimes I find myself adding/removing cars from my policy multiple times a month, but it's always easy since you can do it online.

I also just signed up with their home owners insurance.

I've only had Geico for the last 14 years or so. No problems, but I've never had a claim. I usually will do a comparison everytime there is a major life changing event-moving, new job, etc. I have stuck with Geico because they are the cheapest and I like their customer service. One service the last time I checked said they just couldn't compete with Geico since I had been with them for so long with no claims.

State Farm wanted three times higher than what I am paying at Liberty Mutual- Jen call Liberty Mutual and see what they can do for you, they offer discounts if you are with a credit union or work at Georgetown Hospital.

With Geico for 20 years with no problems (knock wood).

You can even negotiate with them on rates to some extent.

Geico's rates were higher than my current rates - I use Hartford. Excellent company.

At one time, Allstate was cheaper for me, then State Farm came through with $200 a year savings. Now, I've been with them for so long, they give me a 10% discount, and, since I have wind, fire and flood with them, I get a multi-line discount too. I tried the Geico think a few years ago, and they couldn't touch them.

Seems alot has to do with the state you live in (as far as car insurance goes).

Be sure and ask about discounts - at one time, my ex was able to get 5% off because of good grades in college.

I have been with GEICO for almost two decades. My homeowners is with Allstate and they can't beat GEICO's rates even with the % reduction on the homeowners. I have never had a claim with them so maybe that help also.

GEICO rocks

I got GEICO when i first bought my VW TDI and they were the cheapest i could find. When I changed over to the van, from what i had already paid on my policy for the VW, I didn't have to make any more installment payments for the van coverage, plus they added roadside service and rental car coverage.

State Farm is definitely NOT the least expensive way to go. I would get quotes from as many companies as you can, compare them, making sure the coverages and periods are the same, and go with the one that offers the least price and has a good record.

I'm with American Family Insurance on everything, including my collector cars, but they don't sell insurance in all states. I switched from State Farm.

...and don't fall for any lines such as Allstate's current "Drive accident free and we'll reduce your deductible" Great. How do you take advantage of that without having an accident (and then it goes away). Reduce my RATES if I drive accident-free. I'd like that better.

OK off the soapbox now....

Good Luck,
Wes

How much coverage you carrying?

My policy for the Benz including collision and and old GMC p/u ( no coll.)
with 250/500 liability and same for uninsured and underinsured and comprehensive on the Benz (also insluding 50k property damage) comes to 750x2 = 1500 per year.
This is through GMAC ( Nat'l Gen. Ins Co.) (AICPA membership group affinity plan). I have been using them for the past 20 years or so.

Also, my carrier does base it's premiums partly on credit scores. Does your insurance company do this? ( It was disclosed on my policy).
