I cut lawns first, made good money doing that. Then I got a job at a marina, which was like my "in". I cleaned boats on the side, crewed, taught sailing, etc, etc. During summer break if I wasn't making $500 a week I was pissed. The jobs paid ok, about $10-$15 an hour, but I was having a lot of fun so that counted for something.

Anyway you can make good money at restaurants, but the hours suck.

You guys have cars, you should make it your goal to drive around and apply to like five places a day. Do that for two weeks and I bet your phone starts to ring.

Don, keep on that hunting... There are still a bunch of good jobs out there, and be sure to not piss off your current management. They can make or break a deal. Apply everywhere, and talk to people. Thats how I got my current job! I love my summer job.... $19.75 an hour, commission, plus expenses..... Sweeeeet.... And I am 19.

There are jobs out there - even in the ATL.

Yes, you have to pound pavement - find out who the decision maker is and keep after them in a nice way.

Never just drop an application off. Drop an application and a cover letter off. I managed a high end bicycle shop after my escape from Corporate America. If a kid showed up with a good cover letter and we had an opening, it usually resulted in an interview.

Younger people are better off applying at small businesses right off the bat. Hiring is usually a local matter

And don't rule out food. My kid was a bus boy at a nice dining establishment through most of high school. He made a good bit of money because he was a hard worker and friendly to the staff and patrons. He got good references and experience and has been able to pick and choose part time college jobs since.

Oh 300SDI - you check any of the local independant shops to see if they need someone to clean up and answer the phone?

The problem is that they cannot recognoze when the computer gives them bad information.
Same for CAD people--We need them. I do not believe "certification" is an issue. Just show up, and prove that you can do the work.
If you feel like relocating to northern MD, let me know; I will arrange some kind of an interview--internet, phone, something.
Even in my field of Construction Materials Testing, I cannot get good people. An awlful lot of people your age just do not want to work, especially in the heat and the cold and the dust of a construction site. I get applications from people who tell me all about their computer skilss--all I need is a realiable person, strong enough to lift 60-70 lbs, with a reliable vehicle that they do not mind if it gets dirty, and who can do basic arithmetic ( add, subtract, multiply, divide, and the occasional sq rt). We start people with no skills at $11 or better--they can get to $13-$14 pretty quickly. If they show some aptitude for the work, and the ability to learn the job, and communicate with people in a rational way, they can get into a little management. I have one job that requires 4 people each day--I would LOVE to have a capable, responsible person to put on that site to handle all the little management-type issues and not continually call my senior-level people.

As an example of the poor quality of people I am seeing coming out of HS and college--- I had a young guy in the field, and as part of the daily work, he has to perform some simple calibrations on the euipment. One task is to average the results from three runs. The data from his three runs was, 3.08, 3.12, 3.10. I am not making this up) I asked him to average them. he punched some numbers on his hand-held graphing calculator and after several minutes, announced the answer was 23.7. I said " No, that is wrong, try it again" He protested, showing me the calculator display. I asked him to try again. On the third try, he got it right. My problem was that he had so little actual understanding of what is an average that he could not recognze that his first answer was absurd.

The work we do is not hard--we test, and make observations, and report what we observe and test.

I'd gladly take that job up if I didnt have to go to college this coming fall and or if it was still march. I'm going to use my contacts and see if any local places need help.. and ones that can work with my college schedule.. it would be great

Hmm

Not what you make, it's what you save.

I've been working for Stop and Shop since 2003. I make 10 bucks an hour. Nothing special, but full medical and dental is pretty nice. Anyways, I usually take home about 250-300 a week clear, sometimes much more if time and a half is there, but normally isn't much in comparison to my friends, but one strategy helps; bank it.

I have friends who make a lot more than me per hour; I have direct deposit at my job, and have 75% go to savings, 25% go to checking. If I really need the money for parts I can dip into the savings slush fund, but I try to live off the 25%. I don't know about your supermarket job Don, but it's an excellent way to develop people skills and get good at talking with hundreds of complete strangers each day; and unlike a restaurant, the interaction can be short and not too involved. Its a great place to develop skills, and if it's a union outfit, the money can be pretty good.

Anyways, it sucks Apple turned you down, but don't sweat it. Keep on keepin on, and you'll be good. My commitment payed off; I was offered an administrative position after I graduate with my management degree.

Getting a good paying job with a college schedule is hard, especially in Florida. What do/would you enjoy doing?

At 15 I was working here... http://www.astraprodco.com/ Making F18 fighter parts at $7.00 an hour. Unfortunately I can't exactly tell you what I made but it was an awesome job! It took me a whole day to find this place and with lots of rejections. But I finally found a place that I wanted to work at and they excepted me for my personality, talent and resume. Yes I had one at 15. It was very good too.

Do you have a resume? Is it good and up to date? Don't just put past employment records, describe what your interested in and your goals. Employers thrive on that stuff! Build a portfolio of awards and achievements over your life and give them that too. Anything positive is always positive in a resume, even if it has nothing to do with the job description. Just flood them with information. Nobody else does it so you'll impress them and get the job!

One guy would start, while his buddy would drive up the street and try and secure more deals. Took him about 15-20 mins to do the lawn. His friend came back, picked him up and off to the next one.

I admired their entrepreneurship.
That reminds me of my first job.... When I was 12 I used my dads pressure washer and spent many weekends cleaning peoples porches, driveways and sidewalks for $10 to $30. I used their water too! My friends and I found lawn equipment like lawnmowers and weed whackers in peoples garbages. We fixed them up and started a lawn service too.
