What a shame... I got my Corvette as a result of a similar incident. Since the fiberglass doesn't respond well to pummeling, she resorted to scratching the F word all over the car and actually punched a hole in the door, probably with a screwdriver.

I was able to get the car for a song and put a couple grand into body work and a new interior.

I have an '84 Corvette that I bought from the back row of a used car lot, I paid less for it than most people do for a average w123 300D, and with the price of diesel, it costs the same to drive the Vette. It gets 24mpg on the highway on 87 ocatne.

It has nice paint and a decent interior, but the po somehow destroyed the shifter and steering wheel, plus it was very hard to start. I took a gamble, and it paid off. The HEI rotor button had shorted to ground, causing the no start/hard start. Thanks to fleabay, I bought a used steering wheel and shifter for less than $100. Thanks to the po for the new tires, exhaust, ac repairs, and cd player I am enjoying right now.

Bah my uncle has a super mint 86 Vette and I wouldn't take it if he gave it to me. My friend had a pretty mint 1991 back in HS (great car for a 17 year old BTW!) which would do some amazing burn outs, but it was cheap.

They are OK in a straight line and turn in decent enough, but the brakes are a joke, the interiors are made out of melted down action men, and the body was put together by blind chimps.

We raced the 1991 Vette against my other friends 1993 735IL...the BMW held its own...and was actualy a decent car!

I guess if you can get one for damn near free, it might be OK. But they are a freaken joke.

The 1984-1996 Corvette C4 can pull 1g with good tires. I doubt even an M3 could do that. While the interior quality leaves something to be desired if not maintained, the brakes are better than what's on most german cars of the same time period. Try, aluminum four piston calipers by Girlock in the front plus Bosch ABS. Not to mention a Corvette has something no German car has, real air conditioning.

Well my uncles 86 with brand new discs, pads all around, and rebuilt front calipers, with stainless lines...had less bite then the brakes of pretty much any MB, my W126 actualy. As far as interior "quality" his is a 35k mile pampered garage queen, and everything is falling apart... The old MB's had very poor AC, but the newer ones certianly don't.

As for handling I have no doubt, I'm sure with the right tires and set up properly it can post very impressive skid pad numbers, and track times.

But I don't normaly drive my cars at 1g on the track, I drive at 40mph on local roads. I find something like any MB a much more pleasent place to be.

The best sports car I have ever driven (so far) was a late model Porsche 911. Very light and crisp feeling, excellent quality in all regards, amazing brakes, can't really fualt the damn thing except on price.

Well, passion has its extremes. The same passion you enjoyed when it was new and fresh can be a real ***** one day down the road when she gets pissed off at you.

I guess the moral to this story is to find a woman who loves and respects cars as much as you do. At least then maybe she won't take it out on your car . . .

I guess the moral to this story is to not piss of your wife/girl friend. They seem to know how to hit you wherever it hurts the most.

don't forget the sheepskins for the minor scuffs on the seats.....

I wonder how many times she redlined the motor while doing neutral drops.

Here is how the story finally ended up!!

I actually saw and drove the car in Mid January and got an email today, the relevant portion of which stated this:

Hi Jim,

Just wanted to say hello and update you on the green sl600. It finally sold (after the first auction had a deadbeat bidder) for $5200. Pretty good deal for someone who knows bodywork.

The seller (George) was cool, and that ^^^^ is the proof.

He told me he just bought a 2000 CL 500 to replace this car.

I looked long and hard at that SL and was sorely tempted. If it had been closer to home I might have bit for no more reason than I love the 129's and a 600 would be a welcome addition. In real life though, the actual cost to fix the car properly would have been astronomical. I have yet been able to buy a wreck and make money on it because I insist on fixing them properly. They call them totals for a good reason.
