Kerry,

I took a quick look out on the web for a site about German Shepherds that did not gush about them endlessly, but that represents the breed as I perceive it to be. Here it is:

http://germanshepherd.info.googlepages.com/

Take note that it is not an exageration when they describe the shedding that takes place. Anywhere that the dog resides, so resides its loose hair.

Exactly what I'm looking for. Where did your brother acquire his dog?

Another POV . . . GSD and their canine kin are excellent guard/service dogs, but it's the result of a great deal of training, and none of it "overnight." For the most part, these breeds are intelligent, but also seem to need a lot of time to mature and grow into their roles.

Its government issue but I do believe they come from private entities.

My process server was former DEA and a pure bred BM in the type of program you are talking about is a $10K + dog. I have a friend that met his at the plane, is still on Belgian commands and if you lift your hands above your waist in his presence, will chew your face off. I would NOT get a BM for civilian duty if you aren't going to go to Belgium and have it trained to your needs. And you know what kind of dogs I have....

Your friends dog and the dogs depicted in the youtube video are true attack dogs.. the Chuck Norris of dogs, my brothers dog is smaller and as you know its multi-purpose, a happy medium that will whoopass only when needed since its mission is to help civilians and other things where civilians are in the proximity of its work zone. From what I gather $10,000 would be a bargain for one of those models. I think retired dogs can be purchased but the new/handler owner has to be schooled with the dog but I bet they are just as expensive.

The website I posted earlier in the thread is selling trained dogs in the 10-15k range. Variety of breeds but mostly GS.

The other part of the equation is training you, I know that to be military dog handler the school is extensive and the training afterwards is non-stop with constant testing and trials. Mastering a working dog is no different than handling any other type of weapon, never forget that trained dogs like these are weapons. Personally I think a loyal Labrador will get the job done for you with minimal risk....that's my .02....IMO.

It's possible. It's just that the dog I owned 35 yrs ago had worked as a guard dog for many years. I don't know if it was ever trained but it was predominantly German Shepherd, and fiercely loyal to me and my family when it moved in with us. It was a guard dog at an RV business that I worked at out of high school. The business went bankrupt and the dog was left chained outside the facility. The owner agreed to give the dog to me since he had no further use for it.
I was working evenings and went to pick it up late one night. Someone must have seen me drive around the building because as I was unchaining the dog, two cop cars pulled up with their lights flashing. After I explained the situation to them, they said that normally they would not have believed my story, except that they knew the dog and no one in their right mind would have gone anywhere near that dog when it was guarding.
Yet in the house with the family it was the most docile loving dog you could imagine. Should a stranger enter the house, or a stranger approach outside, it was a different story altogether. I went to college and left the dog with my parents and even though they really didn't like dogs, they kept it for years.

The down side with that dog was that the owner of the business never worked with the dog. He was only really interested in it guarding the inside of the building at night. He was the only person who wasn't afraid to approach the dog (except for me once I befriended it) and he would just unchain it from the telephone pole outside where it was kept during the day and let it loose in the building at night. Most of the employees were absolutely terrified of the animal. But I could control it for the most part. It's loyalty to me might be accounted for my what you mention in the post below. I had rescued it from a pretty miserable life.

^^^ I was using Labrador as a Generic term I think that if you hired a dog whisperer type they could find the dog you need at the pound, rescued dogs are best known for being fiercely loyal and protective.

There are lots of choices if you want more of one trait than another. My own personal experience and opinion, for all around friend, guard dog, companion, babysitter, etc. you can't go wrong with a German Shepherd.

I know enough about German Shepherds that I could probably sit here and type for the next hour. If you have kids in your home and want security there is no other dog.

Taking Howie's advice I looked at the local no-kill shelter. They currently have a Rotweiller/German Shepherd mix:

They also have a couple of purebred Rotweillers.
