Two-thirds of Americans are overweight!

That's what ABC News says. Two-thirds of Americans are overweight and that figure is growing! They said soon it will be everyone.

I don't know if I believe that everyone will be overweight. Do you?

I don't know. The other day when my wife and I were at the mall and I looked around at most of the people there, I have to admit that at least 65% of the people I saw were overweight. Not obese (100lbs overweight), but overweight.

Too much fast food I think.

i think (might be wrong) overweight is considered up to 20% of proper amount; obesity is more than 20%. (Meaning, you can be obese without being 100lbs over.)

but i know what you mean

It's a HUGE problem, no pun intended. The Canadian Medical Journal (CMA) recently had a focus on it and how the system is bracing for the eventual healthcare implications this 'obesity epidemic' will cause.

Scariest part are the young teens who probably can't even run 5K.

My daughter just graduated highschool, all four years physical education was not mandatory, so she didn't take it. Yes, she's pudgy. She WON'T EXCERCISE! She cries if you talk to her about her weight...

When I was in highschool P.E. was mandatory, all four years.

What happened? Kids today are fat and lazy!

Kids today are unfit in every sense compared to us and unfortunately they don't realize that it will have a severe bearing on the later part of their life with problematic health issues.

Guilty.

Although the "goal" weight for me is an impossibility since my playing weight was 235 and would still be considered "overweight" thanks to BMI. That said, I could still stand to drop 40 lbs.

I always told myself that once I hit 40yo I'd make some drastic lifestyle changes healthwise. That threshold is rapidly approaching.

Start soon Swamp. I weighted until I was 52 to try and get back to a more reasonable BMI. It took a heart attack to get me motivated. Believe me, this is not the ideal way to get motivated.
I last saw 235 my senior year of high school. With my height & huge upper body, that was a pretty decent weight. As the years went by, I got almost to 290 at my worst. I'm now almost down to 250. My primary doc & cardiologist want me down to 240. By the typical BMI charts I should go even lower, but I'm trying to keep my goals realistic, thus attainable.

I know, Stone, I should just get on it and stop putting it off. I've been hovering at 270 since the winter (6'3"), down from 285 the previous year. I'd be happy in the 240 range. I've always had in the back of my head "when I'm 40..." but there really is no time like the present and it's only a year away now anyway. I've got to work on my mindset.

One thing that should help is that my wife has now started getting back into pre-kid shape (going to the gym and cooking healthier) so I won't have much of the tempation in the house. Damn food.

Technology may be making our lives easier, but it's also dumbing us down and making us softer. My better half is about to enter UTA masters program for cultural anthropology & sociology. She pulled this one on me a few weeks ago:
- Give me your cell phone
- Here
- What's Gary's phone number ?
- ***-***-****
- Ok, what's his cell number ?
- Um, GARY (SEND) ?
- Dana's number ?
- Um, DANA (SEND) ?

I got her point. I don't need to remember because the phone remembers for me. I'm 41 and still reasonably sane (?). When I was a teenager and before the cellular influx, I knew everyone of my friend's home and work numbers without question. Now, without my cell, and Verizon's Back-Up Assistant if it's lost, I'd be lost.

I think the obesity factor among kids is due to complete lack of exercise.

I live in a nice development with lots of parks and walking trails, and I virtually never see kids outside. I think they are all inside watching TV or playing video games.

I've posted this before, but there are kids up and down my block, and I never see them play outside with each other. There are girls that live right across the street from each other that are one year in age apart, yet they never play with each other.

When I was a kid growing up, we were not allowed to watch TV during the day. In fact, we weren't allowed in the house during the day, unless we were sick.
