Tom, isn't a metal cap code in most places? I have never seen a brick chimney without a cap.

The block chimney should be up to code because it was just built 2 or 3 years ago. The brick chimney has been there for years and has never leaked.

Well, Bill I'm glad you found your problem. The custom aluminum cap is a great idea, and shouldn't cost too much. A galvanized steel one will work as well but obviously not as long as other metals. Not really accessible to paint is it?
Anyway-good luck! And try to keep your son away from the .22! One last thing - I'm looking for a used head for a 103 engine ('89 300E). The 5th cylinder rocker arm assembly bolts broke off on the head and I've heard I can get a used one for cheaper than fixing this one...any idea?...anyone...?

This thread sure is timely.
I checked out my brick chimney, and it has no metal cap, so one is going on this week. We rarely use the chimney, so I never bothered to look up top. What's strange is that virtually none of the chimneys in my neighborhood have metal caps. Must not have been requirement in the building code in 1980.

Been through all types of rain - hard rain for an hour, couple days of soaking rain, nice wind swept rain- and no leak at all.
No doubt the mortar cap. Thanks to you all.
