The advantage to the SSD drive units is that they are slimmer and lighter than the hard drive models.
When I'm finished upgrading my sister's she'll have 16 gigs of flash storage total (8 gig SSD + 8 Gig SD card) + WinXP + 1.5 gigs of ram. Plenty for her needs.

From This Month's Wired magazine
The great terror in the PC industry is that it's created a $300 device so good, most people will simply no longer feel a need to shell out $1,000 for a portable computer. They pray that netbooks remain a "secondary buy"—the little mobile thingy you get after you already own a normal-size laptop. But it's also possible that the next time you're replacing an aging laptop, you'll walk into the store and wonder, "Why exactly am I paying so much for a machine that I use for nothing but email and the Web?" And Microsoft and Intel and Dell and HP and Lenovo will die a little bit inside that day. |

Lenovo S10
Better built machine. not as much RAM but then who the f*#k needs 4 GB to run most portable apps? I prefer a HDD (160GB) but also carry a 16GB express card for transferring big stuff.
SSDD is ok but 120GB is the max available in a 12.5mm drive. 8=( I've had a Lenovo S10 since the first week of Jan and have yet to find any major faults. Its far lighter than my old Dell D510, just as fast, yes the screen is smaller but I can always plug into one of the 17" flat screens in the site trailer and my back likes the Lenovo. I hit 2 to 3 different jobsites a day and using a 3G card in the Express34 slot I can access any data on the company net (Plans, Shop drawings, Piece drawings, you name it) or public databases (City/State Dept of Buildings, Specs, etc) and using a penpad of same size I can draw a fix in realtime, email to my Sr engineer, get an approval and issue a fix on the site-saving me hours/days of RFI bull****e and tsuris. My Dell's always had issues with build quality or HDD failure caused by Dell MB issues. My IBM's and Lenovo's have never had any issues...they just work. I have had issues with Asus in the past orphaning their products and customers, same with Dell but for some reason IBM and Lenovo can still support machines that are 6 to 7 years old (try getting Dell to find you a manual much less an english speaking person who actually worked there 7 years ago!). I see more and more mobile types carrying the netboooks and lots of companies are issuing them and setting up an external Citrix type network to support them. There is a reason for that--and most people don't want to hear it--but they utilize fresh-killed puppy parts to make their processors. I know its not PC, but with the economy the way it is, it just makes better sense to use braised and cured puppy heart than to spend all that money mining silicon. Personally, I hope that in a couple of years, we can go back to using puppies strictly for companionship and moo goo gai pan, but for now, I'm with you on the better performance of the Lenovo's.

Apple Netbook Unlikely
While one must grin a bit at the statement that Apple doesn't know how to make a sub $500 portable . . . they have to be aware of the market segment between the iPhone and the macbook. How much would a larger version of the iPhone, like a "tablet" device, bring from the sippers of the Cupertino kool-aid? |

I'm going to send this thread into my Congressmen to support the adding of more stimulus money to support the promotion of team sports in public schools.

Well this thing isn't bad. Difficultty getting used to the keyboard but I'm not going to be doing anything major. Tiny, light, order to delivery about 14 days... nice.
Keep forgetting it has two mouse keys.

I got a 8GB thumb drive loaded with 8 DVD movies and music videos (with room to spare) for the flight tonight.
I've read that there's a keyboard remap utility for folks that can't hack the apostrophe location, but it's not a big deal. Have fun with the new "puppy" laptop. |

So I have a Macbook, a netbook, and a smartphone. I'm all set, I think.
