Since the loudest part of a show usually does not come right before a commercial comes on, the commercial blares at you.
If you were to take a microphone and a V.U. meter and watch the meter during a regular show...the needle would go from 0 up to about 80 most of the time...occasionally PEAKING above the 80% mark towards 100%...

Now the fun part... ( Tee! Hee! )

When the commercial comes on...Boy! Howdy! Stand back and plug the ears! What you'll see is the fact that the needle barely DROPS BELOW 80%!!!!

The advertisers insist on compressing the living crap out of the audio, into such a small and high level dynamic range that it's not so much that it's loud but it's ALSO beating the crap out of your eardrums for 60 seconds straight.

If you ever played with your kids and they went "Monkey Pile" on you...it's OK for 1 minute with maybe three or four 30-40 lbs. kids...

But now, consider "Monkey Pile" for 5 minutes with 9 or 10 adults...Rugby anyone?

That's about what your ear drums are putting up with...

So now, the FCC "thinks" that taking Full-grown adults and changing them over to nine or ten adult midgets (vertically challenged) is going to make things any better?

I say, get rid of the the compression altogether...no artificial hacking on the audio...if the needle doesn't rest on "0" five times during a 30-second spot, it doesn't make it to the air waves...

Your ear drums and brain with be better for it...

Scary, isn't it? I normally don't mourn the passing of celebrities, but there is some palpable sadness, maybe because they are so close to my age!

I had to cut the top part, which makes a whole lot of sense. I hadn't thought of the audio compression being a factor, but now that you mention it, you're on to something here.

But I really cannot understand the vertically challenged part here. I think that something is going right over my head. Perhaps I should stand a bit taller...

Yikes, more, not so old people dying.
I'm 50.
Yet I'm not afflicted with an excess of money.

I saw his show "Pitchmen" a few times and it showed him to be a genuine, nice, and humble person. I really enjoyed that show. I will miss him. He was OK. His son was just getting into the business as a director and Billy was very proud of him. If he was darkening his hair with Grecian Formula then that could have done it, lead sulfate.

Yeah he was just on the Conan O'Brien show, he seemed like a nice fellow, but as everyone says his commercials were freakin' annoying. Too bad that's his legacy

I read somewhere, he was on a plane, and a guy says that his awsome auger broke, so Billy pulls some money out of his pocket and gives the guy his money back.
