My buddy has a couple of those horns on his Miata. Mostly because that car is basically invisible to people in SUVs though.

Living and driving from another country allowed me to learn how to toot the horn in a way that it is not offensive but actually communicates your intentions. A simple beep beep (rapid succession, not pressing the horn too long) should be enough to get her attention. It's like saying "wake up" or "let's go". When it's a warning, I hold the horn pad longer, especially if it's imminent. If it's just a reminder (somebody swerving out of their lane unintentionally for example) a simple tap of the horn usually gets their attention. Since my horn is pretty loud already (I've upgraded from factory stock to Bosch FSA2 supertones) I try to use them conservatively and more sensibly than when I had stock horns.
I agree with MBeige about "horn communication" - here in Holland I think it is probably politer to just drive into someone than use your horn - you can very easily get a disproportionate reaction from horn use even when you give a simple blip if the car in front doesn't seem to know what a green light means...

However in somewhat warmer European countries such as Turkey (OK it is also in Asia), Greece, Malta, Cyprus and Italy the horn is regularly used much more like 'hey everyone I'm here - I don't want to hurt you'!
Taxi drivers in Cyprus seem to use it to say hey everyone I'm for hire.

It is nice however to read all of your experiences and reactions - waving a gun out of the window and throwing grenades indeed - you know what over here I think that just might work as the person / gun density is pretty low here (unless you go to Switzerland of course)

But hey seriously I think we should all be driving with as much patience as we can muster at any one moment in time.

As long as humans are in control of the vehicles all we can do is to do the best we can - I guess "they" will put computers in charge of it all in the end.

Ok, I see what you're driving at...

Let's call it a predisposition or temperament then. For me, it's more a choice to be tolerant and not bothered. I'll simply continue to drive defensively, and that will be that.

I might be slightly irritated if you invade my personal space (ie cut me off), but, I don't see any reason to be vengeful or vindictive.

You can choose to be "tolerant" and not act on your emotions. The question is whether you have any emotions when a DB performs in a bad way. Some folks have no emotional response...........no anger..........no rise in blood pressure..........no thoughts of revenge...........nothing.

Others have those thoughts and/or physical response and realize that they have the response and suppress the need for any action on their part.

Others have those thoughts and/or physical response, don't realize that they have the response, and take actions for revenge.

Each of the three categories, as noted above, also have a wide range of subjects within each category. In the first category, the extreme would be a person who can continue to carry on a conversation with their passenger and not even notice a vehicle behind them flashing lights and riding their bumper.

In the last category, the extreme would be a person who shoots a DB for tailgating him. I recall a movie clip that I enjoyed very much. A gangster just got an older M/B back from the mechanic and is taking it for a test drive and some DB decides to tailgate him............I believe it was a W116............it was excellent.

Police harrass MERCILESSLY, those driving old retired Crown Victoria P71 Police Interceptors.

They call their drivers "Whackers" --- wannabe police, probable child (and female) would be kidnappers is how they view them.

see www.crownvic.net and www.officer.com for more.

I am not kidding about this. It is true. That said, the CVPI is a very good used car so long as you don't get a dog unit (Louvres on the hood) and a vomit comet (regular city patrol unit that had perps in the back)

Best ones are the unmarked take-homes, Captains and detectives and supervisors units, that have never been on patrol service, and had only one driver and no extended idle time on the engine.

Best of the best are the Street Appearance package, the rare ones painted in non metallic pastel, all CVPI heavy duty and high performance police equipment but look like an ordinary car. Smart money buys a low mileage one of those.

Very very hard to find and were unavailable to buy new by civilians

Then, when some rat-canned mufflered ricer with a pathetic set of boombox speakers laying in the hatchback area pulls along side...I can "toot" in unison with the beat coming from his tin can.

Either that, or a competing set of speakers that can belt out "The Flight of the Valkrie" with window-shattering sharpness...

Then, if I really get pissed...

BTW, has anyone ever looked into the availability of the air-horns that are mounted on diesel engines that pull 200+ box cars of product around this great country of ours? You know, those train horns that can wake the dead from 3 miles away?

That might be the ticket...can you see the guy in the "offending car" FINALLY waking up and wondering why the hell he's hearing a train horn and is he actually in some danger 'cause he can hear the train horn which sounds too uncomfortably close to him?

Just a thought...
Do they need an air kompressor to work?

omg I would LOVE one of them, an air horn, to blast at every cell phone yakking, and texting driver I see. And there is no shortage of them, even though it is illegal to text and gab on the phone while driving in this state, and most offenders are typically females, and especially adolescent females.

Forcing them to pay attention, AND to drive with both hands would be a Public Service.

Special shout out too...

Special shout out too all of these lovely people who take up the handicapped spots because they will be back in just a minute. And to those young punks who react to "thanks for making me walk" as I come limping along. One of them sized me up but did not know that walking and punching are different abilities.

Several {about 20}years ago I was driving a 1970 $50.00 Chrysler Newport as daily transport. Coming home from the rental in Brooklyn I was tailgated on the Belt Parkway by this mooncricket in a riced out Honda, the fellow just wouldn't change lanes.
Push came to shove, the Belt being what it is I slammed on the brakes, in anticipation of the slowing traffic ahead of me. The fellow slammed into my rear bumper which completely destroyed his plastic crap, plus a noticeable radiator leak, but nary a mark on my rusted chrome.

I didn't even stop, screw him, I thought, Likely doesn't have insurance anyway.
