Asus is the largest manufacturer of motherboards.
Very good but not the best.
For really high end systems I use Tyan boards.

For my own computers (deskstops and notebooks) I use only Asus.

On my newest pc I have Win7 64bits, works good. Even very old programs that didn't run on Vista 32 bit work now.

W7 has proven to be stable and fairly fast on all the systems I have installed it on. I have it installed on everything from a Sony UX UMPC to my quad core gaming box.

Just a warning... Some of my older devices (printers, video capture card) will not work with 7. Haven't had the time to try and "make" it work yet, but out of the box, they do not work. Some of my older software also does not work with it, and like before, have not had the time to try and "make" it work.

The XP Virtual Machine solves all of those problems as i've quickly learned through the entire upgrade process.

In my case, HP decided to not update my printer's drivers for 7 and had instructions for using another set of drivers to get it working.

The virtual machine lets you attach USB devices such as printers, scanners, and other goodies. Go ahead and give the virtual machine a try if your machine can take it.

I purchased a Toshiba A505-S6980 laptop in December 2009. It came with Win7 Home Premium. Based upon the very good reviews it seemed like a good deal. Later, I find that their repair service is dreadful. It replaced a Dell Inspiron 6000 with XP Professional it was a good machine. I really like this Toshiba but if it needs to go in for repairs I see big trouble.(intergalactic back order for parts) I should have bought a HP or Asus. The horror stories are on the laptop forum on the Toshiba website.

Hm, I have like a 5 or 6 year old printer that works just fine, plug and play I didnt even have to install any drivers.

Cmac, you can also just reinstall Windows XP and your comp should be good for as much longer as the hardware lasts. Computers just tend to need to be wiped periodically, im surprised you made it 5+ years.
Also if you want to use a lot of older hardware or software I'd stick with 32bit Win7. If you can't find a 64bit driver for something that needs it and you have Win7x64, you're hosed.

I should actually change that to say that its not compatible with 64 bit.

I still want to try and make the older software and hardware work with 64 bit, but have been to busy with work... :/

Ah. SUrprisingly my 5+ year old printer works fine with 64bit, windows found and installed drivers by itself. This is my home built desktop. But that is a good point to consider, that older hardware might have problems with 64bit drivers.

I have a 9 year old postscript printer that refuses to die, so i keep it around.

Its got 32 bit support, but not 64 bit support.

I hate to admit it but sometimes this stuff makes me feel like the proverbial old pooperoo. Carn-sarn-it, all these dang new fangled things . . .

I'm going to try to do a quickie self tutorial off of the web about the 64 bit thing. I don't have much hardware or software - just my HP printer, about 3 years old. I've been wanting to get a used copy of some sort of autocad, Autodesk 2008 or something, but since I haven't done it yet, I can make sure I get one that's compatible with 64 bit.

But I'm pretty certain that there's no reason to re-run the XP pro install on my current machine and choose 64 bit, as it only (only, hah, a while back it was a lot) has about half a gig of Ram.

Wow.. ok. Intel CPU's have been killing AMD raw performance wise for years now. Pretty much ever since Core2Duo's were released. AMD has just started to catch up in the past year or 2. The only thing they had going for them before was price. I've always used AMD CPU's (currently running a 3 core AMD CPU) and have never had a problem with them but I'm no fanboy and can accept Intel's are faster.

lol, ha. AMD fanboy?

All modern Intels (core i3, i5, i7) now support virtualization. The core 2 duo in my MacBook also supports virtualization.
