a 240 is a well balanced car with precise controls if all is in good working order. It'll lean in a corner but ultimately has good road holding.

Yes add the heavier 617 engine and the automatic removes some of the charm of that 123 chassis in my opinion. I found the 114 gas cars to be much the same in my hands. Similar to the 240ds. With less roll perhaps. The 240d with the manual will do a nice even controlled side slide in my experience on the road. This can stop a spin out occurring. Tires also seem to be involved as well.

I had some time finding the right tires for the old fintail. Before I got rid of the under steer..

A budget modification to the 123 240d that should not unbalance the car in any way. A rear end and speedometer change. With a turbo addition. Just to make it a little more drivable in some cases.

The heavier engine does reduce the charm of the 240 vs the 300. The 300 handles nicely too but not a crisp as a correct size tires 240.

The five cylinder not only upsets the wonderful balance but it also makes it a pig to work on under the hood by comparison to the four cylinder.

Indeed.

The 240 was the faithful work horse. The 300 was a rich man's car back when it was new.

I am heading out now to Columbus in for the last autocross of the season. It is supposed to be sunny and to get up to a bit over 50 degrees, 9 mph wind.

Wooo Hoooo!

The FF. It turned out to be an excellent day. Not too cold and not too windy. No rain or snow.
The course was loaded with slaloms and chicago garages. There was one fast place where I hit the rev limiter each run. We got seven runs. At least 6 cars went completely off course, ending in the corn field. At least half those fellows were very experienced autocrossers, I never felt I mastered the course but still felt fairly good about my effort.
I did not look at the times until the end. I had fast time in my run group and third fastest for the day.
The car handled perfectly!

Wooo Hooo!

The left three are what we call pointer cones, meaning to go on the other side of the one standing up. The two on the right are marking a 8" deep x 48" long mud hole.

I did knock over plenty of cones yesterday but not any in that photo.

Now that's what I am talking about.

Yesterday I converted a clear deflector I had purchased to make a competition style small windshield for the cobra into a full face shield for running the FF. Made a pattern of heavy paper, trimmed the lexan to size, heated it up to 300 F in the oven and bent it to the correct shape while it was still hot and plastic in its behavior. Then pop riveted it onto the existing short visor.

I'll have to get a pic and post it.

Thanks for the explanation, I did not know how you navigate an autocross course. I never seen you mention running at Purdue football stadium parking lot. Do they still have those there. It must have been late seventies when my brother in law was a student at Purdue, on one visit we spent a day spectating?
