But I hate these things so much. I really hope some drunk redneck knocks one or three down or someone torches them.

I foresee more accidents at intersection where none really occurred. Bank on it! The elderly, law-abiding drivers begin slamming on their brakes to avoid running the red. The following-too-closely drivers pile into the slamming-on-brakes cars.

You are ticketed for turning right on red if you do not wait longer than 5 seconds. Joe, I did not know this tidbit that could earn a citation. Thanks!

I went to the grocery store a few nights ago and I didn't have to turn at a light but when I walked out of the store I kept seeing bright flashes from the intersection.

Sure enough, damn red light cameras in action. $150 fine each flash. I see the city and county's revenues going up
Give 'em a few months, they'll be removed because they are a losing proposition for your city/county. Some are too dense to not learn from the cities in other parts of the country that learned the hard way they were a financial net loss.

Until then, start slamming on your brakes as I do....

No, they don't work - or if the ones with the smoke-dark shading covers are being used - that is an offense too.
Your point being? Mostly you get a "fix it" ticket. Velcro the thing on, get it inspected and remove. That is what I have been doing. Got only 1 "fix it" ticket in the last 10 years.

Is there anything for the back that does work?

No front license plates in AZ . . . the intersection cameras are designed to take pictures of the car's Booty. I believe Mythbusters debunked the spray on products and also the plastic cover.

Yeah I run Osnabruck germany plates on the front and my ohio tag on the back. It got me. So I can attest to it just being the rear.

First I hate them too, some studies have shown they do NOT decrease accidents.
Most studies show they do NOT at all decrease the severest of accidents.

They are a $ grab, here in IL there is a state law that they can only be placed at intersections with a high % of accidents. Funny the Tribune found few were.

And until recently they were basically uncontestable, IF you could get through the bureacrcy(?) to contest it it cost you a 100 bucks to contest a 100 ticket.
That fee was NOT refundable, they have changed some of these laws recently because of the public outcrys. They eliminated tickets if you stopped, but beyond the line amongst other things.

One Suburb that was making boat loads removed them because it was driving people away from the shopping center.

Several suburbs have found them considerably less profitable than hoped.

Note though every flash does NOT indicate a ticket, I pass through one sometimes late. I very carefully stop, yet the light flashes, they photo me, then manually review the video.

More justification for a big brake kit.

Have no idea what you are now attempting to talk about....my post answered your two questions.

My point is simple. If all you get is a "fix it" ticket, fix it, let them see it, sign off on it and remove it. Most of the time you will get away with it. That will cut down on the front shot cameras.

I was also wondering if there was anything that can defeat the rear camera.

For California:
I will have to check this out at an upcoming trade show as this doesn't sound correct. As I remember it here, all you have to do is come to a complete stop.

For the record though, I checked the following with a few reps of the camera companies at various times over the past 5 years.

There are limit lines, cross walk lines and intersection lines and you are not in violation of running a red light as long as the nose of your vehicle has crossed the nearest (to you) of these. The crosswalk is considered the beginning of the intersection.

I can't tell you how much piece of mind this gives me while driving. I still have the brake slammers to avoid though...

Also, you must be able to clear the intersection once you enter it or you will have run the red light.

I see.

Unless there is a matching picture of the front license plate too, they have no case. They haven't been used to cite for no front plate here that I am aware.

The two major intersections within a mile of my home in MY city that had them - do not anymore. Neighboring cities still have them that I occasionally drive through.

"Nipper" (the Moderator of the Subaru Outback forum) slowed down and stopped for the amber light just before it turned red.

The guy in the car behind him, however, had stomped on the gas pedal and floored it, trying to "beat the yellow".

He was in passng gear when he rammed the back of Nipper's then stopped Outback.

He told the Police afterward that he was so sure "Nipper" was going "to try and beat the yellow light too" that he floored it and then he rammed the back of the then-stopped Outback full on.

It was a horrendous rear end crash.

Years later "Nipper" still feels the results of the injury.

I'm not so sure about that. Never heard that one yet. The issue that was raised has been one of privacy because they took a front shot of the license plate AND the driver AND possibly the passenger. So, when they mail the pic to my house and my wife opens the envelope, she might see the pic of my car, me and the naked girl in the passenger seat and that might cause an issue or so the excuse went. I haven't heard that they have to get BOTH shots. What I heard was 1 front with the driver and the license plate. Can anyone confirm?

In WI and several states, BY LAW, you have to drive with BOTH your plates on. The back plate has to have a month sticker on the left and a year sticker on the right. If you don't have the front, they can pull you over. At which time, they can issue you a "fix it" ticket. This means you go home and put it on, bring it to the cop shop. After the "show and tell" session, a cop signs off on it. Just did that yesterday.

The point is, that if they have a FRONT picture of your tag/license plate, they got it when the light turned red BEFORE you got into the intersection.

If they do not have a front tag number to MATCH the rear tag number - tell 'em to go F_____ themselves - because it isn't proof that it's your car.

The guy above that apparently just went ahead and paid was a fool IMO. Around here, you just contest them, and they go away - or so I've heard. They are not legally binding when it gets down to it - around here anyway. The sheep just send their money in without contesting it.

If your wife doesn't know that you are driving around with a naked girl in your car, you have marriage problems beyond the picture. You should fix that by not concealing the information from her - or why are you married?? You're not very sensible it seems to me, that is hiding anything from your wife..

OK, I got the 'fix-it' expression meaning now - thanks for clarification.
