GREAT NEWS!!

One thing to remember is that cars of that era are simple to hot wire. All you need is a positive wire to the positive side of the coil, and one to crank the starter. No computer; no electric fuel pump, no electronic injectors, easy, simple. You need the key to be able to turn the steering wheel, but you can get the engine running simply.

Sounds like your battery might be bad. It shouldn't lose volts just sitting.

Richard,

Here are some numbers for you.

http://www.428cobrajet.org/production.html

It's one of 122 428CJ/SCJ convertibles built.

I am not clear about the GT designation, I believe it is one of 58 built with the R code engine.

That is one valuable non-running vehicle your family has there.

It's a 1969 model - lockable steering column was introduced on the Mustang in 1970.

Neat old 'Stang.

Those braces have been available in the aftermarket for decades. It's very possible that it was not factory installed.

From Old Cars price Guide:
1969 Mustang Convertible
condition/ price
6/1300
5/3900
4/ 6500
3/ 14630
2/ 22750
1/ 32500
Note that condition 6 is basically a parts car, #5 is a complete vehicle but needs complete restoration of all systems and parts.#4 is a driver, #3 is very good, #1 as it was produced and in the condition at the end of the assembly line IF everyone did their job.
Most cars in car shows are #2 to #3. #1 is not driven as sand pits on the chrome or glass would drop it to a #2.

Oh. One interesting note on the price:" Add 30% for Cobra Jet v*. Add 40% for Super Cobra Jet."

If it's as rare as stated above and just needs cosmetics it might be a better idea to just get it roadworthy. Research "Historic Preservation of Original Features" HPOF with the AACA. Rare, original cars are commanding top dollar. Remember you can restore a car over and over but it's only orginal ONCE. Also a poorly done restoration will cost you more in the long run. I would get it running, clean it up and show it as it is. Serious enthusiest's will appreciate it more than a trailer queen.

i'll have to agree.i myself would never even consider buying a totally restored car.i tend to be a perfectionist and the little things that are wrong on a resto just bug the hell out of me.if i was looking at it , i would fix what needs fixing do a nice repaint, new top and drive it.

Wow. We can pretty much throw my numbers out the door. I thought we were dealing with a 390.

Something with this low of a production number you never really know what its going to bring. Best bet is at some kind of auction.

My suggestion is to contact these people.

//www.f40.com/

They are the premier dealership of classics in the North East, and can find a buyer as is, go through the restoration process and consign, or perhaps buy it outright.

It will at least give you a starting point.

Thats what I was talking about. Those rings have very little force on the cylinder wall untill there is cyl pressure and that wont happen until it fires. Winding over with a fresh battery will lube the pistons and off you go. Pulling those plugs will be a pita.

At this point, in my opinion, it matters little whether it runs or not. Whoever buys it is going to rip it out first thing.

different brace, the chrome one is definitely aftermarket, the brace that makes it a 428 is between the shock tower and the engine. It is about a 1/4 thick plate bent to match the contour of the tower, it was mentioned when he was talking about taking out the plugs. It may add strength, but it definitely makes the plugs a challenge. I have to unhook the motor mounts and raise my engine to service the plugs. there are special sockets you can get but I tried them and they are a little tough on the ceramic tops of the plugs. another trick I learned to get them in and out once loose is to put a rubber hose on the plug and it acts like a universal
