Well, those were the prices as of this morning anyway.
Lucky dog! Here diesel is running about the same as premium unleaded, around $0.35 over RUG.

Don't overlook that fact that most of that premium will be returned at resale- unless it happens to be one of Ford's 6.0 or 6.4 disasters. Even at that, I think there's still a pool of buyers out there who aren't aware of their history.

Witness a kid who worked for us while one of my salespeople repeatedly had his personal 6.0 in and out of the shop. After all that, he bought a 6.0. "I got a great deal!"

I suppose it all falls back to that luck, or lack thereof.

One word gentlemen....

Cummins. Made in Colombus Indiana. If you have work to do the Cummins cannot be beaten.

The premium at resale time is very significant. My 03 with 125K miles is still worth 16K. You probably can buy a gasser for half that.

I get as good a fuel economy pulling my travel trailer 13 as many gasser trucks get driving empty. Pulling my utility trailer i get 16 and pulling the formula ford I get over 20.

Back when I had the 91 350 SDL I got nearly as good economy with the 6000# truck which is 2' taller and a foot wider as I did with the benzo.

The truck is nice to drive but the benzo was nicer.

Anyway These things are 10 yrs old now and I have been keenly interested in what people would be saying at this point. The 6.5 gm -not to mention 6.2 was never really in this class.
Tyler--Yup 98% of the people who have em DONT really need this kind of power--twice as much as a semi from 25 yrs ago. Its a power trip no doubt, But im not considering a contemporary 350 chevy or 368 -whatever it is-cylinder deactivation or not.

Iwrock--2 grand is The most SMOKIN deal I have heard yet and even thought i would definately be lookin at it like the hot/slightly rough chick with the tribal tatoo pointing down at he butt crack-------
Car fax saying it just had to have headgaskets redine again 3 mos ago, I would still be thinkin for that price, worst all cases I could part it out--I have a problem with thinking like that.

We have three

ambulances at my station. Two are Ford Powerstrokes and we have one Chevy with Duramax.

All I can say is that the Fords are out of service much, much more than the Chevy for mechanical issues. The Duramax is also quieter and smoother than the Powerstrokes. Power is fine with the Duramax although it does not seem to have as much as the Powerstroke. Box weight is about the same on all three.

These units take a beating. They go from rest to WFO most of the time and some of the country roads around here are pretty basic. I personally prefer the Chevy for handling at speed.

Dad has an '01 duramax 2500 that he uses for the farm. It's been a good truck. Had the injectors replaced under warranty, and did the lift and water pumps. Truck has almost 400,000 km on it, and it's still running like the day it was new. As we are 100 miles from the nearest city, and if a machine breaks down, we need to drive to that city, or a large town 60 miles away to get parts, the fuel economy is a good part of it. It gets an average of 30 mpg (imp) just driving. It does 16-19 driving with a trailer full of cattle depending on the wind. (100 km.h plus winds are not unheard of here.)
As farmers here, we're allowed to run off road diesel in our trucks on the highway. That makes a significant difference in the cost of fuel as well...

If I bought an 01-04 durimax for $5k, and had to do another $3k in repairs, I'd still be happy with that deal.... I'd probably add a chip to it to reduce the power while driving ordinarily, and raise it while towing...

30 imperial gallon,no load! We say 21 tops down here a hypermiler using the tactics might get a little more. and you say you would switch to a detune chip for regualar driving-Hmm--even better mileage?
OK the injectors in these modern obdII diesels are kind of like hybreds of Diesel injectors --ad a old benz owner would know---And current gas efi injectors--high pressure selenoids that open and close as fast as humming birs wings flap---or do they just open and squirt?

I couldn't tell you what they did to get the mileage... Fuel receipts verify the mileage though... And that's at an average of 120 km/h. He did have the injector's pressure lowered, and it has updated injectors put in when replaced under warranty...

He doesn't have a chip on his truck, but up here they're a common thing... He had the diesel shop lower the pressure in the computer...
