This is why most law enforcement agencies issue Glocks, they are less training intensive than everything else, because quite frankly most cops don't shoot anywhere near enough. With a Glock its just point and click, nothing to remember, and the 17's they are issued have close to bottomless mags.
You raise some good points. However, we had an incident in Carson City a few years ago where a capitol police officer who had just gone off duty witnessed a fight while walking to his car. He tried to break up the three dudes who were fighting and they all turned on him. They ended up taking his weapon from him, holding it to his head and pulling the trigger. Luckily the perps hadn't figured out the whole thumb safety business by the time backup showed up, so the officer wasn't shot. I don't know what they issue these days. I may have to check.

I have a Glock, but my home defense weapon is a single action revolver. I've shot it enough that I don't think remembering to cock it is going to be a problem even when some tweaker breaks in my house in the middle of the night.

Follow all four and you will never have an accidental shooting. These rules are so simple a child can learn them. For those too young to learn these rules we have Eddie Eagle's instructions to youngsters encountering unattended weapons:

1. Stop.
2. Don't touch.
3. Leave the area.
4. Tell an adult.

Firearms, like many things can be dangerous, but lack of proper training is what really makes them dangerous.
Skippy- I was taught, and teach, a different variation of the four rules of gun safety. Mine leaves out your #4

1) there is no such thing as an unloaded weapon
2) never point your weapon at anything you don't want to destroy
3) don't put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to pull it
4) always know where your round will go if you miss your target

You have to violate at least 2 of the rules above to hurt someone.

How is that S&W in .44? It seems like it would be kind of snappy, what about .357?
.44 Special is roughly equal to a 1911 .45 in recoil. The .357 is more snappy.

Now the .44 Magum on the other hand.....

I have loaded weapons near every door and in the barn. When stray dogs or worse decide to go after my stock an unloaded gun in a safe isn't going to be much use. My kids all knew by the time they were 2 or 3 what a gun can do to a large piece of living flesh. They also knew that touching the old man's guns would result in the severest punishment. We never had an issue and they are all proficient shootists with weapons of their own. My case is admittedly special.
While it's just a personal opinion, I think anyone who'd select a pink gun is thinking more about a fashion accessory than a deadly weapon, and probably shouldn't own one.

But I Know you stated that your child and a friend were snooping around thus eluding that your offspring was the instigator. Now if you had stated that your child's friend and he were snooping around I would have posted differently. I hope your child has matured to a fine young adult and is in good health at this posting . Too bad you and your friend could not have worked things out about the hidden weapon .

It is truly a horrendous occasion when the death of a child happens for any reason however snooping around in a neighbors attic and youthful zeal are not comparative here but rather simple teachings of respect for others peoples property is the point I was trying to make.

Children need to be constantly supervised in the world we live in today or mishaps will occur. You see it on the news daily . Kids get out of the house and lock them selves in cars and die of heat exhaustion,or jump in the swimming pool when parents are cooking dinner and drown ,they get mauled, maimed and killed by pets in their own home or neighbors yard because they are unattended and left to run wild about the neighborhood or house,Mall, neighbors house ,supermarket and elsewhere.
You have your mind fixed on a conclusion before you begin to think, which I assume does happen to some degree. In his post was the following:

One afternoon my son came home and mentioned that he and his friend had found a gun in the attic.

No mention of snooping, or looking, just that it was found. He further stated that the other child had already known where it was, which makes sense, as kids will tend to explore every nook and corner of their parents stuff.

I'm inclined to conclude that you are not an honest person.

Another Reason Cargo Pants Are So Popular Here

Eric Fiegel, 22, was arrested at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday after police reviewed surveillance footage from a pet shop that shows a man stealing baby albino boa constrictors July 30 from Predator's Reptile Center in Mesa by placing them in his pants and exiting the store, according to Mesa police.

If you're referring to the original incident it was a 9mm. Hopefully shredded him good and did society a service in the process.

This Walther is a better design, it has a hammer drop and positive safety on the upper slide, which is very European. Same as a 92FS and Mak. I like this design, if the trigger catches when you shove it down your pants you won't shoot your penis off!

This is what I bet his wife had, or something similar. All the cheap little .380's/9's have about the same battery of arms. Notice the trigger is very far out in the guard, almost like a toy gun. The reason for this is for a long heavy pull which in theory makes accidental discharges impossible. Also you carry them in a holster which covers the trigger. Still if the trigger is pulled it will go off.

The reason for this design is because its easier to make and less training intensive. A manual safety must be swept off for the weapon to function, and in a stressful situation that may not happen. When you consider someone 20ft away with a knife can stick you with in in only a few seconds, not remembering to sweep the safety can be the difference between life and death.

Two of my guns have no safety and I prefer it that way. I just dont touch that trigger. EVER!!!
