which winch is which?

None of the rental places here have trailers with winches to load a non-running car. How much of a winch should I get to load something like a W140?

Will a 4000 lb come-along do it or will it take thousands of strokes?

Will a hand crank winch with about a foot long crank handle have enough advantage for my skinny arm to pull a 2-ton car up a loading ramp?

Harbor Freight has a $30 winch with a "pull vehicles up to 3 tons" claim but I've seen stereo amplifiers that use bigger power wires. I guess you get what you pay for with a foot a minute loaded draw rate.

Thanks,
Sixto

The come along will do just fine for a 4000 lb car. I've used them many a time on a 8,000 lb diesel f350. It is definitely slow, but gets the job done. The cheapie ones from harbor freight are not worth it in my opinion- look at the ones from Grainger or Four Wheel parts. They are about 5 times the price, but much safer and a tool you will have forever.

If you have enough spool and length of cable, add a pulley-hook, attach that to the car, then attach/hook the end of the cable back near the winch. You double your "pulling power" with alot less effort on your arm/winch. It'll take twice the time, but if you don't want to worry about "face-slap," that's the way to go.

Now, if you don't have enough spool and the cable is only as long enough to reach the car once, then get a tow strap and use that as the attachment to the car and use the above mentioned pulley-hook to pull the strap(s) that are attached to the car to get your vehicle up on the trailer.

Again, practice safe winching...eye glasses, gloves, etc....

Sixto,
If you were from a farm, I would suggest fence wire strainers. I have used them to pull cars out of bogs, lift motors out & drag a stationary motor up onto a trailer. Most car trailers over here have boat winches on them. On the low gear they pull a car up ramps no problem.

I have used a variety of these over a number of years.

My suggestion: get a come-along that uses a chain instead of a cable. You will be AMAZED at how easy it makes everything that you are doing by hand.

I have a battery-operated winch and I still use the chain come-along.

Lots of them in Craig's List for 75.00-100.00 and last forever, easily resold, worth every penny.
