Breach of Privacy

This afternoon I get a phone call from a ratings company doing a 4 minute survey. They used my full name and referenced a visit to my bank that I made a few days ago.

She started launching right into the questions and I immediately stopped her and told her that my banking business is confidential. She said that none of the questions are of a confidential nature, to which I responded that them having my name and personal contact information is already an affront to me. That's where it ended.

I plan to make a visit to my local branch tomorrow and raise a stink about this. Is it supposed to be OK for total strangers to call you at home and start asking questions about personal banking?

Without knowing all the details, it could be that the bank has hired a public relations or advertising firm that is doing customer polling. If so, it's not illegal, but probably rude and misguided that the bank does not notify customers so they can opt out of any such contact.

If it wasn't the bank that contracted the call, then somehow a third party has obtained your information to call you.

Last summer I had to do something which required 15 mins of interaction with a banking "specialist" -- and a few days later they called me with a customer satisfaction survey.

I don't recall that they knew the nature of my business and none of the questions were of a financial nature. They all had to do with how well this person met my consumer needs.

They are probably doing a survey for the bank.
I often get phone surveys after some sort of transaction with a business.
If you dont like it, best talk to your bank manager with a withdraw slip in your hand.
Down here, when you make a cash withdraw over a certain amount they have to do all sorts of reports. When they ask what the money is for, I always say to settle a drug debt. They dont like entering that reason.

I'll probably show up in their database with an "easily agitated" notation next to my name.

When it comes to me and the people handling my money, I expect total privacy, though maybe that is an unreasonable expectation in 2012. Having strangers calling me about my recent bank visits just seems intrusive, it almost constitutes another form of phishing.

It is also a breach of security.

If someone clones your bank card / credit card and starts withdrawing cash from cash machines - what do you call them ATM's? - you know where to point the finger first...

When your bank offers to enroll you in a rewards program or free insurance or the like it often involves giving your information to a marketing company and making you their little butt buddy.

I recently heard about a girl that works at a local bank. Seems she enjoys looking at customer accounts for no other reason than to find out how bank customers are spending their monies. She especially enjoys looking at accounts of people who have large sums on deposit. She likes seeing where they are taking vacations, what new cars they are buying, etc etc. Of course, we can all rest easy knowing she NEVER discusses any of this confidential personal financial information with any of her friends......

The system is working.

The wife of an ex-employee worked for big bank in the security department and would look-up transactions of people who were of interest and share the details with her husband.

I do not know about the United States. In Canada the government can access your total information and accounts records quietly. Safety boxes are gone through periodically I understand as well.

I do not have a box but when the bank states there are only two keys I question it. I suspect a master key as well may exist.

It used to be that on personal individual deposits over 10k the government recieved a notice of. Now it can be on random lesser amounts. Whose descretion the dollar amount may be interests me if true.

In Canada there are only seven major bank chains and they are pretty much in bed with the government.

that is because they believe your business is their business. privacy is pretty much history. think of the government as your business partner, sort of a joint venture or a do-it-together kit. only one problem, your business partner wants a lot more out of you than his fair share. If he can't get his hands on your money, your blood supply will do.
